As the founding Senior Data Engineer for Viva 360, you'll design and build the data and AI backbone of Viva Leisure's new analytics platform. This hands-on role focuses on developing scalable data pipelines, machine learning infrastructure, and decision engines that transform raw data into real-time, predictive insights driving member retention, acquisition, and personalisation.
You'll architect and operationalise production-grade systems, implement data governance, and integrate ML models into core business functions. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of data and AI in the fitness industry — with autonomy to make key technical decisions, direct visibility to leadership, and the chance to expand the platform's impact across brands and use cases.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIESML Pipeline Engineering (40%)
- Design and deliver production-grade ML pipelines to support churn prediction and member acquisition models.
- Develop and maintain feature stores for reusable member attributes across multiple use cases.
- Build model training, versioning, and deployment workflows using MLflow and other MLOps tools.
- Create and manage model serving endpoints to enable real-time inference at scale.
- Engineer decision engine pipelines that automate marketing interventions and member engagement.
- Design rule-based and ML-driven decisioning workflows to optimise business outcomes.
Data Infrastructure (35%)
- Build scalable ETL/ELT pipelines ingesting data from 500+ locations and multiple external platforms.
- Implement Databricks lakehouse architecture with Delta Lake for unified storage and processing.
- Configure and optimise cloud compute resources for both batch and streaming data workloads.
- Design data models optimised for analytics, reporting, and ML feature extraction.
Data Quality & Governance (15%)
- Implement Unity Catalog governance with fine-grained (row-level) security across 11 brands.
- Build automated data quality checks and validation processes into pipelines.
- Develop audit trails and lineage tracking for compliance with member PII regulations.
- Manage schema evolution and ensure resilience for downstream consumers.
Operations & Optimisation (10%)
- Monitor pipeline performance, ML model inference latency, and overall system reliability.
- Automate workflows using orchestration tools such as Airflow or Data Factory.
- Establish robust alerting frameworks for data freshness, pipeline failures, and model performance degradation.
- Maintain clear documentation of architecture, pipelines, workflows, and runbooks to ensure knowledge continuity.
We are looking for someone with:
Education and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Postgraduate qualifications in data engineering, data science, or cloud technologies desirable.
- Professional certifications in AWS, Azure, or GCP (Data Engineer focus) highly regarded.
Skills and Experience
- 7+ years' experience building and maintaining production-grade data platforms and ML pipelines.
- Expert in Python (PySpark, pandas) and SQL for data engineering, modelling, and optimisation.
- Proven experience with cloud-based data services (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Skilled in designing data lakehouse architectures, governance frameworks, and scalable ETL/ELT workflows (Airflow, Data Factory, etc.).
- Strong understanding of dimensional modelling and ML lifecycle management, including deployment, versioning, and monitoring.
- Proficient with Git for version control and collaborative development.
- Familiarity with MLflow, Kafka/Kinesis/Event Hubs, and BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker) desirable.
- Experience working in multi-tenant, regulated data environments handling PII and compliance requirements.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with a proactive, ownership-driven mindset.
- Bonus: Experience in fitness, leisure, or subscription-based industries, and knowledge of Australian data privacy standards.
