Position overview

Aviation Meteorological Services provides the aviation industry with specialised meteorological services contributing to efficient and effective aviation operations within the Australian Flight Information Region and the Asia-Pacific Region.

We are seeking motivated meteorologists to join the Aviation Operations Delivery Team, based in either the Brisbane or Melbourne Aviation Forecasting Centres (AFC) including the Hazardous Weather Unit (HWU).

Products and services while working in the role will vary over time, depending on the skills and experience. Successful applicants working in Melbourne can also gain further experience while providing services and creating products as part of the Hazardous Weather Unit (HWU).

The role requires the Basic Instruction Package for Meteorologists (BIP-M) qualification as a minimum, and one year's experience in an operational meteorological service delivery environment is desirable. In keeping with current Quality Management requirements, a requirement to maintain an Aeronautical Meteorological Forecaster competency, and additionally for the HWU role, Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre Forecaster competency. Training and certification will be provided to successful applicants if required.

The Aviation Meteorologist is responsible for maintaining a suite of products and services for aviation users and will prepare and issue the following products as required:

  • TAF
  • GAF
  • AIRMET
  • SIGMET
  • Aerodrome Weather Briefing
  • Wind Shear Warnings
  • Aerodrome Warnings
  • Ditching Reports
  • Search and Rescue forecasts
  • FIFOR

As part of a team, the Aviation Meteorologist will contribute to the development of forecast policy and collaborate with other meteorologists to ensure the provision of a consistent suite of services.

The Aviation Meteorologist role will involve the production and issuance of forecasts and warnings from either the Brisbane or Melbourne AFC, for low-level aviation clients, including forecasts for international airports. The role may also include the requirement to liaise with customers and service partners and provide briefing services to support decision-making.

Aviation meteorologists based in the AFC Melbourne also have the opportunity to work in the HWU which will involve assisting with the provision of high-level aviation services and products as well as working in the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC). When working in the VAAC, tasks involve monitoring several hundred volcanos for eruptions within one of the most geologically active regions on the planet and issuing advisories and providing briefings to allow aircraft to avoid dangerous volcanic ash plumes. HWU meteorologists will also engage in periodic SIGMET collaboration trials with neighbouring National Meteorological and Hydrological Service agencies and add local expertise with input to the World Area Forecast Centre predictions across the Australian domain.

  • Volcanic Ash Advisory/ Volcanic Ash Graphic
  • VA Graphical Daily Activity Summary
  • Medium-level SIGWX charts
  • High-level SIGMETs
  • SIGMETs in support of Antarctic flights, as required
  • Area QNH

The Aviation Meteorologist will commence and commit to continually developing their skills in scientific, technical, professional and personal fields by:

  • Attaining and maintaining forecasting competencies
  • Learning and developing knowledge of forecasting and customer requirements
  • Contributing to aviation projects
  • Participation in the performance development scheme
  • Depending on experience, mentoring more junior staff by providing guidance and instruction on forecasting and customer requirements.

Shift work is required for this role, as are regular periods off the roster to assist in projects or customer engagement activities to improve the effectiveness of Aviation Meteorological Services.
