Teaching School Hub

At Westminster, we believe we have a responsibility to help, support and develop the teaching profession,

which is why we host South Australia's first Teaching School Hub. Our Hub is a partnership between

Westminster and several leading universities, designed to provide high-quality initial teacher education

while offering excellent additional in-class support for our students.

We recruit some of the most-promising pre-service teachers during their university studies, giving them a

strong foundation and ensuring they are classroom-ready. The Teaching School Hub supports their growth

through expert mentors and collaboration with Westminster's most experienced teachers, helping pre-

service teachers develop into the educators our students deserve.

The program also provides opportunities for aspiring and certified Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers

(HALTs) and our expert teachers to share their expertise and lead improvement across the education

system. Our Teaching School Hub is a thriving community of practice that fosters excellence, innovation,

and collaboration in education.

What is the Westminster School Teaching School Hub?

The Teaching School Hub is a partnership between Westminster School and leading universities, designed to

give future teachers a richer and more practical pathway into the profession. Each year, high-quality pre-

service teachersare selected from university applicants who are then employed by the school on a salary

equivalent to that of a Learning Support Assistant (LSA). Depending on availability and school needs, pre-

service teachers are employed part-time at Westminster School one or two days per week alongside their

university studies.

Each pre-service teacher is paired with a mentor from the Hub who provides ongoing support, feedback and

guidance. The annual rotation of mentors allows pre-service teachers to engage with different teaching

styles and ensures they benefit from a broad range of expertise.

Pre-service teachers begin by supporting students in the classroom under the guidance of their mentor and

experienced teachers. As their confidence and skills grow, they progress to leading small groups of students,

engaging in team teaching with their mentor, and eventually taking full responsibility for lessons, all with the

support of their dedicated mentor and wider Teaching School Hub team.

Alongside this hands-on experience, pre-service teachers continue to complete all requirements of their

university degree such as practicum at a variety of schools. With university approval, they may also

undertake their final placement at Westminster School. Pre-service teachers are further supported by a wide

range of professional learning opportunities offered through both the Teaching School Hub and Westminster

School's extensive professional learning programs.

This integrated approach ensures pre-service teachersgraduate with both academic knowledge and

extensive real-world teaching experience. Our Teaching School Hub provides aspiring teachers with a unique

opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience while completing their university studies. By the time

they graduate, our pre-service teachers are not only equipped with strong academic knowledge but also

enriched with significant classroom experience. This ensures they are career-ready with the best possible

foundation for a successful and fulfilling teaching career.

The Teaching School Hub provides pre-service teachers with valuable opportunities and experiences that

complement their university education, bringing their learning to life and setting them up for success. By

combining study with meaningful, school-based experience, pre-service teachers are better prepared and

more confident as they begin their teaching careers.

As part of the program, pre-service teachers gain regular paid work that supports their studies as well as

provides invaluable classroom experience. With the guidance of a dedicated mentor and Teaching School

Hub Team, they receive personalised feedback and professional development tailored to their growth as

future educators.

In addition, pre-service teachers have the opportunity to explore a variety of teaching areas and school

contexts, broadening their skills and perspectives. Just as importantly, they form strong and lasting

relationships with students and colleagues within the Westminster School community, giving them a

genuine sense of belonging and connection as they progress through their studies.

If you are interested in joining the Westminster School Teaching School Hub, there are a few simple steps to

follow. Applicants must be enrolled in a university program leading to a teaching qualification, such as a

Bachelor of Education or a Master of Teaching.
