About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Infrastructure Engineer to support the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on a critical Network Project.

In this role, you will act as the primary technical escalation point for complex network and security issues, providing expert guidance across Fortinet and Azure-based infrastructure. You'll work closely with CASA's internal teams to ensure the successful deployment, stabilisation, and ongoing operation of a secure, modern network environment.

This is a hands-on, senior engineering role suited to someone who thrives on solving complex problems, shaping technical standards, and working in a secure government ICT context.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the dedicated escalation point for the Network Project, resolving complex technical issues in a timely and proactive manner.
  • Provide expert technical guidance on:

  • Azure Cloud Infrastructure

  • FortiGate Firewalls
  • Fortinet SD-WAN
  • Fortinet Azure NVA deployments
  • FortiClient, FortiSASE and FortiSandbox
  • Design, review and optimise network architectures to support CASA's security, performance and availability requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues across on-prem, cloud and hybrid environments, ensuring minimal downtime and strong service continuity.
  • Map data flows across network zones and cross-domain environments to support security, compliance and architectural clarity.
  • Create and maintain detailed network diagrams using Microsoft Visio, ensuring accurate, current documentation of the environment.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including configuration standards, runbooks, design documents and troubleshooting guides.
  • Collaborate with security, architecture, operations and project teams to ensure solutions align with CASA's policies and strategic direction.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders, providing options, trade-offs and recommendations.
  • Contribute to knowledge transfer and uplift of internal teams through guidance, coaching and best-practice recommendations.
About You

You are an experienced Senior Infrastructure / Network Engineer with deep hands-on expertise in secure enterprise environments, ideally within Federal Government or other regulated sectors.

You're just as comfortable in the console as you are in a stakeholder meeting, and you take ownership of issues through to resolution. You bring a structured, methodical approach to troubleshooting and design, supported by strong documentation and communication skills.

Essential Skills & Experience
  • Proven experience working in a contemporary, secure ICT environment as a Senior Infrastructure or Network Engineer.
  • Hands-on expertise with:

  • Azure Cloud Infrastructure (networking, NVAs, routing, security controls)

  • FortiGate Firewalls (policy configuration, VPNs, high availability)
  • Fortinet SD-WAN (design, deployment, optimisation)
  • Fortinet Azure NVA deployments
  • FortiClient, FortiSASE, FortiSandbox in enterprise contexts
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a senior escalation point for complex network issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical and strategic matters to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven attention to detail, particularly in technical documentation, configuration records and change artefacts.
  • Experience mapping data movements across network zones and cross-domain environments.
  • Advanced Microsoft Visio skills for creating detailed, accurate network diagrams.
  • Ability to work effectively in a structured, secure environment with formal processes, standards and controls.
Desirable Skills
  • Prior experience working in Australian Federal Government or other highly regulated environments.
  • Understanding of security standards and practices relevant to government ICT environments.
  • Experience contributing to network design reviews, standards and reference architectures.
  • Familiarity with automation and scripting (e.g. PowerShell, Azure CLI, Terraform) for deployment and configuration management.
  • Experience with monitoring and logging tools for performance, capacity and security insight.
  • Exposure to zero-trust networking concepts and secure remote access patterns.
Technical Competencies
  • Enterprise network design, implementation and support
  • Fortinet security stack across on-prem and cloud
  • Azure networking (VNets, NVAs, routing, security groups, VPN/ExpressRoute)
  • Network security, segmentation and data flow mapping
  • Troubleshooting complex, multi-domain network issues
  • Network documentation and diagramming (Visio)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset
  • Clear, concise technical and non-technical communication
About the Project

The Network Project is focused on delivering a modern, secure and resilient network platform to support CASA's critical operations.

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer will play a key role in:

  • Supporting the rollout and optimisation of Fortinet SD-WAN and security solutions.
  • Enabling secure connectivity across CASA's network zones and cloud environments.
  • Ensuring the environment is well-documented, supportable and aligned to CASA's security and operational requirements.

Your work will directly support CASA's mission in maintaining and enhancing the safety of Australian civil aviation.

Why Join This Project
  • Work on a high-impact Federal Government initiative that underpins national aviation safety.
  • Be the go-to technical expert, influencing design decisions and standards.
  • Modern technology stack with Azure and Fortinet at the core.
  • Hybrid working arrangements in Canberra CBD (subject to CASA requirements).
  • Competitive daily rate via Sedha Consulting with a long contract term to 30 June 2026 and a possible 6-month extension.

If you're a seasoned infrastructure engineer with strong Fortinet and Azure experience and enjoy solving complex problems in secure environments, we'd love to hear from you.
