The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West, Great South, Upper wheatbelt and Peel Regions of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of Services including: GP Clinics, Primary Health Care, Counselling, NDIS and community host various programs. SWAMS has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.

The SWAMS is dedicated to enhancing employment opportunities and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This position is designated under Section 50 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA), and as such, only Aboriginal people are eligible to apply.

About the role

We are inviting applications from enthusiastic and committed individuals of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent for a meaningful opportunity as an Aboriginal Youth Worker within our Out of Home Care program.

This is a true casual position with flexible hours and no minimum hours per week, offering the opportunity to work in a way that suits your lifestyle and availability.

As part of a supportive and holistic team, the Aboriginal Youth Worker will engage with young people—primarily in their early teenage years—to provide mentorship, cultural insight, and personal support. The role focuses on fostering personal growth, intercultural understanding, and social development, with a strong emphasis on cultural identity and respect.

Key responsibilities include:


• Organising and supporting activities that promote cultural connection and personal development.


• Collaborating with the Cultural Practice Advisor to assist young people in their transition from care to independent living.


• Contributing to the assessment of young people's needs through observation and evaluation.


• Implementing strategies outlined in care plans and participating in their review to ensure outcomes are clear, relevant, and achievable.


• Building trusted relationships with foster carers, young people, and their families.


• Engaging respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members, while maintaining the privacy and dignity of families.


• Preparing and maintaining confidential records as required.

This is a varied and purpose-driven role that offers the chance to make a lasting impact in the lives of young people while celebrating and strengthening cultural identity

About you

Essential

For any roles noted as 50D roles, proof of Aboriginality will be required before interviews will be booked or conducted. Below is a list of what is accepted as Proof of Aboriginality at SWAMS.

  2. Confirmation of Aboriginality from another Aboriginal-owned Organisation that includes the Common Seal


• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and contemporary issues affecting them.


• Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with communities, families, children and young people.


• Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to proactively establish and sustain effective stakeholder relationships.


• Sound written skills, including report writing


• Demonstrated ability to manage own time and work resources.


• Ability to work effectively as a team member.

Desirable


• Possession of or substantial progress toward a relevant qualification at tertiary, diploma or certificate level or relevant lived experience and willingness to complete further education.
