Where you'll be working
This role is based at the Waratah Campus, within the Specialist Cancer Genetics service. The team includes two Genetic Counsellors, an Intake Officer, an Administration Officer, and a Data Manager, all working collaboratively to deliver high-quality genetic counselling and support services. The Waratah Campus provides a dynamic and supportive environment, offering access to a wide network of health professionals and resources across the Hunter New England region.
About the role
As Senior Genetic Counsellor, you will provide expert genetic counselling to individuals and families at risk of hereditary cancer. You'll lead multidisciplinary teams, supervise students, and offer consultation across HNELHD and NSW. The role also involves contributing to service improvement, clinical research, and innovative models of care, while supporting the Service Manager in planning and development of the Cancer Genetics Network.
About you
You bring extensive experience in client-focused genetic counselling for individuals and families at risk of cancer, with the ability to provide specialist consultation across regions or clinical networks. You have strong communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated through effective collaboration with health professionals, community groups, and agencies. Your clinical expertise includes developing care plans for complex cases, using tools like TrackGene and risk prediction models. You are self-motivated, manage competing priorities well, and maintain strong therapeutic and professional relationships. With significant experience supervising staff and students, you also demonstrate clinical leadership within multidisciplinary teams.
Requirements:
- Must have an undergraduate degree in a non-nursing, non-medical discipline and in addition hold a post graduate qualification in genetic counselling and have attained Part II certification in genetic counselling from the Human Genetics Society of Australasia
- Have extensive post graduate clinical experience in cancer genetic counselling
- Current drivers' licence with the capacity and willingness to travel to NSW Health business and service locations throughout NSW which may include overnight stays.

- To be eligible for permanent employment in this position you must be an Australian Citizen, or a permanent resident of Australia, or a New Zealand citizen with a current New Zealand Passport.
