The incumbent will be responsible for leading the design, and implementation of underground mine ventilation systems ensuring a healthy, safe and compliant working environment.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Develop sustainable and regulatory-compliant mine ventilation designs.
  • Modify and adapt existing engineering practices and technologies to be applied in practical mining operations and projects.
  • Produce underground mine ventilation concepts, layouts, designs, trade-offs, scenario planning and execution plans.
  • Construct life-of-mine ventilation network models and perform airflow, heat, contaminant, blast fume and radon simulations for different mining scenarios using industry standard ventilation network modelling software (Ventsim or VUMA).
  • Identify hazards, assess and manage risks in the workplace to improve health and safety, reliability and performance of underground mine ventilation systems.
  • Identify and select appropriate ventilation equipment including ventilation controls, ducting and scrubbing/filtration systems to ensure a healthy and safe environment.
  • Provide expertise in problem-solving regarding engineering, operation, and maintenance of ventilation systems.
  • Provide advice and guidance regarding ventilation requirements to assist mines with meeting their statutory and health and safety obligations.
  • Develop, implement and monitoring programs minimising workplace and environmental pollution involving chemical and physical hazards
  • Implementing and reviewing environmental health management plans and occupational health and safety plans.
  • Ensure ventilation systems are compliant with mine health and safety regulations, industry codes, and environmental standards.
  • Lead or support risk assessments, ventilation incident investigations, and safety improvement initiatives, when appropriate
  • Travel to site to conduct ventilation surveys site, inspecting and auditing workplaces, and on-site training.
  • Support business development endeavours

Project Management:

  • Manage medium to large size projects within scope, budget and timelines.
  • Develop and project budgets for ventilation and occupational hygiene projects and management plans.
  • Coordinate project execution, including feasibility studies, equipment selection, contractor supervision, and commissioning.
  • Project management on technical study and design work - internal and client meetings and presentations, report writing, technical reviews, report edits and progress reviews.

Team Leadership and Mentoring:

  • Mentor and guide junior and intermediate engineers, technicians, and ventilation officers.
  • Contribute to technical training programs and succession planning.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement

Stakeholder engagement

  • Support business development initiatives.
  • Participate in relevant client engagement and networking and internal development initiatives.
  • Build and maintain client and partner relationships.
