Are you someone passionate about reshaping the mining industry from early-stage planning to relinquishment and making a positive impact through geotechnical work?
If that sounds like you, we'd love to meet you. We're growing in the Oceania region and are on the lookout for an ambitious Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our dynamic team. Come be a part of a visionary journey that is all about making a positive impact. This role is open to our Brisbane or Perth offices.
At Okane, we believe that integrated mine closure planning is just the starting point to 'Help Create a Better Tomorrow'. We work with mining companies to return land responsibly and safely, enabling what comes next to serve both people and the planet. Our work challenges the status quo — we advocate for meaningful partnerships with communities, including Indigenous rightsholders, and design solutions that create lasting financial, environmental, and social value. From early-stage planning through to relinquishment, we're helping reshape the future of mining — and we're looking for people who want to be part of that transformation.
Responsibilities:
Leadership and Mentorship
In this role, you'll be more than just an engineer; you'll be a leader By providing mentorship and technical guidance, you'll support our geotechnical team and other technical disciplines. Together, we'll ensure that core processes and technical standards are not only met but exceeded. Your role will be instrumental in fostering a safety-first culture by actively participating in health and safety initiatives.
Innovative Technical Solutions
Bring your geotechnical expertise to the forefront You'll apply advanced principles to lead creative problem-solving approaches, developing conceptual models that support our closure planning and design efforts. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, you'll ensure that geotechnical aspects are seamlessly integrated into project designs, setting the stage for success.
Project Management and Collaboration
As a project manager, you'll oversee budgets, scopes, and schedules, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. You'll facilitate workshops, conduct risk assessments, and engage in multiple account analyses with various stakeholders. Your ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders of all expertise levels will help us maintain strong, productive relationships.
Client Engagement and Proposal Development
Building lasting relationships is key You'll develop strong ties with clients while fostering existing relationships. Your insights and connections will help generate new leads and opportunities. You'll also take the lead in developing proposals, outlining work scopes, and estimating schedules and costs to ensure our projects are well-planned from the start.
Continuous Learning and Travel Opportunities
We believe in growth for everyone. In this role, you'll have the chance to mentor junior staff, helping them grow and share knowledge within the team. There may also be travel opportunities for workshops, client meetings, and site visits, allowing you to build connections and gain fresh insights first-hand.
Expectations for this Role:
- You'll build strong professional relationships with clients and actively engage in business development initiatives, exploring innovative opportunities beyond your project scope. Your insights will be vital as you communicate with our technical leaders.
- We take a holistic approach to decision-making, ensuring we consider financial, social, and environmental impacts on Okane. Plus, you will have the opportunity to mentor junior staff and help them grow
- In our fast-paced environment, your adaptability and prioritization skills will shine as you navigate unexpected challenges. Lastly, you'll engage in our critical thinking process, mastering the "Synthesize" phase and stepping into the "Recommend" phase.
- You model Okane's Core Values in every client interaction and are a trusted voice within the team.
- You actively integrate health, safety and environmental considerations into every aspect of your work. This may look like completing hazard assessments and other HSE project requirements, following internal procedures and policies, participating in safety training, and promoting a safety culture.
- You are comfortable working flexibly across time zones and travelling from time to time.
Qualifications:
- You will develop a strong understanding of material characterization, including fill and tailings materials, alongside fundamental knowledge of geotechnical design, slope stability, and seepage.
- Proven experience in mine and tailings operations is desired, with operational or closure experience within the industry considered an asset.
- You will demonstrate critical thinking skills that facilitate leadership at both strategic and tactical levels.
- Your strong written and oral communication skills will be essential, as you will engage in writing and reviewing proposals, technical reports, and regulatory submissions.
- Possessing strong project management skills will help you excel in this role.
- You will have a robust working knowledge of regulatory and legislative frameworks, including the Global International Standard for Tailings Management (GISTM).
- Your ability and willingness to coordinate with staff and clients across different time zones will enhance collaboration.
- Experience with relevant software packages such as GeoStudio will be beneficial.
- Additionally, your experience in building and leading teams by managing, motivating, and influencing will be a strong asset.
- You will demonstrate the ability to prioritize effectively, consider alternative solutions, and respond quickly to unexpected and changing conditions.
- A Bachelor's degree or (preferably) a post-graduate degree in Geotechnical (Civil or Geological) Engineering is required, along with being a Licensed Professional Engineer and the willingness to act as an Engineer of Record.
