Applications are invited from suitably qualified registrars for the position of Advanced Trainee in Emergency - Retrieval Medicine with the Tamworth Retrieval Service (TRS). Successful candidates will provide direct or remote medical care to critically ill and injured adult and paediatric patients requiring medical retrieval from pre-hospital or health facility sites with missions ranging across the northwest of New South Wales. This is a highly collaborative, dynamic and rewarding role. Excellent communication skills and teamwork are paramount for success in this role.

You will be responsible for arranging patient management in accordance with the best interests of the patient, both prior to and during transport. You will ensure an appropriate handover of patients transferred to another hospital and document relevant clinical information legibly, concisely and accurately as well as timely completion of database entry.

Aviation and clinical currencies must be maintained in order to remain operational.

You are encouraged to attend and participate in training, teaching and quality assurance programs as required by the Medical Director of Tamworth Retrieval Service. Bring to the attention of a supervisor any matter that may affect patient care or patient and staff safety.

You will be required to consult with NSW Health and NSW Ambulance staff as required with respect to patient management and transport related issues. Communicate effectively with senior staff as required regarding clinical management of patients. As well as consult with NSW Health and NSW Ambulance staff about critical care needs of patients within NSW Health district's using established telehealth capability.

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Late Stage Advanced Trainee or Fellowship qualification in Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia or Intensive Care.
  • Ability to competently care for critically ill and injured patients in the prehospital and interhospital environment with minimal resources and backup.
  • Ability to perform duties competently, both physically and psychologically, in the prehospital and inter-hospital environments.
  • Ability to safely adapt clinical practice to the environment.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate concisely, diplomatically and effectively with a variety of health and non-health professionals.
  • Proven ability to comply with organisational policy and procedures, especially those related clinical governance and to safety.
  • Ability to undertake and maintain aviation training including HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training), winching and all other contracted requirements of the aviation training agency. Ability to provide critical care advice and management via phone and telehealth to patients with critical care needs throughout the HNELHD district.
