About the Cardiology Department

The Cardiology Department is responsible for the provision of an extensive range of cardiac services to inpatients and outpatients including general cardiology, electrophysiology, heart failure service, echocardiography, cardiac catheterisation, interventional and structural heart procedures, and non-invasive diagnostic procedures.

About the role

An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic Cardiology Heart Failure Fellow to join our Cardiology Department for a 12-month Fellowship position from February 2026.

A regular day will see you:

  • Provide heart failure patient assessment, consultation and management for inpatients and outpatients across Austin Health.
  • Develop competence in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).
  • Understand and apply the indications for device therapy in heart failure (pacemakers and ICDs).
  • Review and participate in the management of patients with cardiogenic shock.
  • Understand the role of intra-aortic balloon pumps and mechanical circulatory supports (ECMO, Impella).
  • Assist in invasive diagnostic procedures including right heart studies and endomyocardial biopsies.
  • Telehealth advice and support to Austin Health nurse practitioners, general practitioners and community nurses with the overall aim of managing heart failure patients at home rather than hospital where appropriate.

About you

As the Cardiology Heart Failure Fellow, you will be someone who has excellent communication skills, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You'll bring energy and drive to your work and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.

To be successful in this role you must:

  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) - (note eligible applicants will be assisted through this process).
  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of cardiology.
