About the Role
We are looking for an experienced sports journalist, or aspiring journalist with a passion for sport, to join our newsroom in Ipswich.
This role is dedicated to covering local sport across Ipswich, West Moreton and the Scenic Rim, telling the stories of clubs, athletes, competitions and the communities that support them. The position will work across print, digital and social platforms, bringing local sport to life for our audience.
Who We're Looking For
We want someone who can:
- Break sports news, build strong local relationships, and champion community sport
- Deliver match reports, sport features, breaking news, live updates and analysis
- Produce engaging digital content for web and social audiences
- Capture photography, or demonstrate an eagerness to learn
- Work evenings and weekends when sport requires
- Hit deadlines in a fast paced regional newsroom
- Engage confidently with clubs, players, coaches and sporting organisations
This role is ideal for experienced sports reporters, but we also strongly encourage graduate and emerging journalists with a demonstrated passion for sport to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Dedicated sports reporting for print, digital and social
- Match coverage, athlete profiles, features and breaking sport news
- Building trusted relationships across the local sporting community
- Producing photography, video and live content to support coverage
- Filing accurate, well written stories to deadline
- Helping grow our digital sports audience and social engagement
Qualifications / Experience
Either:
- Journalism or sports media experience, or
- A degree or diploma in journalism, communications, sports media or similar, or
- Completion of Year 12 with a clear pathway into journalism (cadet applicants welcome)
You will also have:
- Strong writing, accuracy and storytelling skills
- A passion for sport at a community level
- A self starter mindset, initiative and strong work ethics
