Junior Cadet Estimator / Contract Administrator About Blackwood Building Company

Blackwood is a design-and-construct builder founded to solve our own development challenges — and we've since grown into a respected name delivering custom residential projects tailored to land, lifestyle, and budget. We don't do cookie-cutter builds. Every home is designed and delivered with purpose, precision, and people at the centre.

Our values guide everything we do:
We Put People First | We Are Solution Focused | We Are Genuine | We Collaborate | We Are Role Models

We're now inviting the next generation of construction professionals to grow with us.

If you're a construction student or recent graduate with a passion for residential building — and you're hungry to learn, contribute, and grow — this is your foot in the door.

The Role – Learn, Contribute, and Build a Career That Matters

As our Cadet Estimator / Contract Administrator, you'll gain hands-on experience across estimating, procurement, and contract administration — supporting custom residential projects from early feasibility to site handover.

You will:

  • Assist with quantity take-offs, pricing, and supplier quotes

  • Support pre-construction tasks including cost planning and tender documentation

  • Learn the ins and outs of contract admin — including RFI and variation processes

  • Shadow and support Estimators and PMs during live jobs and client meetings

  • Gain exposure to custom residential builds from $1M to $5M

  • Work closely with senior staff across design, delivery, and finance

Ongoing Development & Responsibilities

As you grow within the team, you'll continue to develop skills across:

  • Detailed cost analysis, supplier negotiations & procurement

  • Contract compliance, project setup and progress tracking

  • Communication with consultants, clients and site teams

  • Commercial awareness and margin understanding

  • Reporting, forecasting, and software (Buildxact, Xero, Jack App etc.)

You'll be mentored by experienced professionals and set on a path that could lead into Estimating, Contract Admin, or Project Management — based on your strengths and interests.

What You'll Bring
  • Construction Management or similar or recent graduate

  • Ideally 1–2 years' experience with a builder in estimating or contract admin

  • Willingness to learn, strong initiative, and attention to detail

  • Solid communication skills — written, verbal, and interpersonal

  • A genuine interest in building and working in a values-led team

  • Positive energy and a team-first attitude

What's On Offer
  • Dedicated mentoring and exposure to the full project lifecycle

  • Career progression mapped around your strengths

  • A collaborative team that values quality, not ego

  • The opportunity to work on architectural homes, not cookie-cutter builds
