The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
What Will You Do?
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Care & Protection/Family Law Practice. You will provide high-quality, culturally safe legal advice and representation to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients across Care & Protection/Family Law and work autonomously and collaboratively to achieve a just outcome; This includes:
- Delivering high-quality legal services in Care & Protection/Family Law matters, including advice, casework, court representation, and early intervention.
- Providing culturally safe support to Aboriginal clients, including referrals, dispute resolution, and Duty Solicitor services.
- Ensuring compliance with ALS policies, complete administrative and case management tasks, and maintain accurate records using ALS systems.
- Contributing to law reform, policy development, and internal procedure reviews relevant to Care & Protection and Family Law.
- Engaging in community legal education, outreach clinics, and professional development to maintain legal knowledge and accreditation.
- Working collaboratively in a team environment, upholding ALS values, EEO and WHS policies, and ethical legal practice.
Who Are We Looking For?
A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:
- Legal qualifications with an NSW Practising Certificate (or eligibility), and advocacy experience representing clients in court or tribunals.
- Knowledge of Care & Protection and Family Law, with a willingness to develop expertise across other practice areas.
- Proven understanding of the legal issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, with a culturally safe and respectful approach to service delivery.
- Strong time management, research, and analytical skills with the ability to manage a high-volume, diverse workload independently.
