Second Person

Southern Highlands Tablelands, Australia Railtrain Pty Ltd Full time $104,000 - $130,878 per year

Job Description

We're RTS (Apart of Railtrain Holdings Group) — one of Australia's largest providers of train crews and rail services, proudly supporting major rail operators nationwide. We are passionate about safety, professionalism, and helping the next generation of rail professionals launch long-term careers.

Due to growing demand, we're developing a new team of Train Driver's Assistants (Second Persons) in the Moss vale region. If you're safety-focused, motivated, and ready for a hands-on role in rail operations, we want to hear from you.

As a Second Person, you'll work alongside a qualified Locomotive Driver to ensure the safe, efficient movement of freight trains. This practical, outdoor role involves shunting, inspections, signal observation, and radio communications.

Job Requirements

  • Assist the Locomotive Driver with train operations, including shunting, marshalling, and roll-by inspections.
  • Perform visual inspections and prepare locomotives, including cleaning and minor maintenance tasks.
  • Monitor and cross-call signal indications, ensuring clear and professional communication.
  • Drive and maintain work vehicles as part of site activities, following safety protocols.
  • Comply with all rail safety standards, company policies, and operational procedures.
  • Participate in safety meetings, identify hazards, and promote a safe work environment.
  • Complete additional duties as directed by supervisors, maintaining professionalism and punctuality.

Job Responsibilities

We're looking for someone who is safety-focused with a strong work ethic and a genuine willingness to learn.

While rail experience is highly valued, it's not essential — full training will be provided.

The role requires comfort with shift work, including nights and weekends. Previous experience in heavy industry, transport, or logistics is advantageous but not mandatory. You should be physically fit and ready to work outdoors.

You'll need to be a team player with good communication skills, able to work effectively alongside others.

To be successful, candidates must be able to pass:

  • Psychometric safety testing
  • CAT 1 rail medical and physical assessment
  • Drug and alcohol screening
  • National Police Clearance

Additionally, you must hold a valid full C Class driver's licence and either have a current First Aid Certificate or be willing to obtain one before commencing training.

Job Benefits

At RTS, you'll be part of a national organisation with a local feel. You'll be supported by managers who lead from the front and work alongside a team that's focused on success. In return, you can expect:

  • A safety-first, team-driven culture where your efforts are genuinely recognised
  • Simple mobile onboarding to get you job-ready fast
  • Ongoing development and access to high-quality training facilities
  • Railtrain Rewards discounts on everyday products, services, and utilities
