Yilabara is a wholly Aboriginal owned employment and training company. We deliver a range of employment services including mentoring services for Aboriginal apprentices and trainees in Central and Western NSW under the Barranggirra Program. The purpose of this program is to support participants to successfully complete their apprenticeship or traineeship and to improve their employment outcomes.

As we continue to grow we are seeking another mentor to join our Sydney team.  This opportunity will based from our office in Castlereagh Street.

As a Barranggirra Mentor you work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants to:

  • build their aspirations
  • improve their confidence and facilitate the successful completion of their apprenticeship or traineeship
  • improve post-training outcomes including placement into meaningful and sustainable employment.

This is a fixed term opportunity to 30 June 2027.

Core Responsibilities

The core responsibilities of Barranggirra mentors are to:

  • Build supportive relationships with Aboriginal apprentices and trainees, implementing support processes to ensure completion of training and achievement of sustainable of employment.
  • Co-design individual mentoring plans with participants.
  • Establish a contact schedule with each apprentice/trainee, their employer and if requested their extended family.
  • Develop supportive partnerships with employers and facilitating the development of support plans between apprentices and trainees and their employers
  • Engage with training providers, developing and maintaining a supportive relationship assisting to resolve issues and implement processes to ensure sustainability and completion of training
  • Provide all participants placed into employment comprehensive post placement support.

Essential Criteria

  • Qualifications relating to Mentoring, Case Management and/or other relevant disciplines will be highly regarded

Skills, Ability and Knowledge

  • Aboriginality – this is an identified position under Section 14(4) of the Anti Discrimination Act 1977.
  • Extensive community engagement experience in working with Aboriginal community and organisations
  • Demonstrated experience in managing stakeholder relationships
  • Extensive experience in client-centred case management
  • Creative, strategic, and analytical thinker with the ability to manage multiple contractual requirements
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills particularly in negotiation and rapport development
  • Commitment to principles underpinning the values of excellence, best practice, and cultural engagement
  • Working with Children Check and National Police Check
  • Valid Current Drivers license [min P2]
