Purpose of the role
In consultation with Director, ELC and Junior School, and in line with the College strategic direction, the Team Leader will
manage the College life of all students at his/her Year level. The primary focus is to lead, manage, organise and promote
excellence in student development. To ensure academic, wellbeing and co-curricular programs are delivered with the full range
of students in mind.
The Team Leader will take an active and positive lead role in cultivating a professional culture in the development and
documentation of a creative and rigorous curriculum and a shared ownership for each students' learning and wellbeing.
The position of Team Leader is an infinitely multifaceted position with various responsibilities and involves working closely with
students, teachers, College management and parents.
Main Duties/Responsibilities
Curriculum Requirements
- Work in collaboration with Head of Learning and Teaching and the Deputy Director, Junior School to monitor, analyse
and improve student outcomes
- Support the commitment of others to the vision, ethos and policies of the school and promote high levels of
achievement both students and professional
- Lead discussion about and improvement of team level curriculum
- To work as part of the leadership team in the process of devising, implementing, monitoring, assessing and evaluating
the curriculum provision, implementation of teaching and learning for the college, including areas of staffing,
curriculum resourcing, student behaviour and achievement
- Facilitate opportunities for team members to review student data to inform differentiation and share effective
teaching strategies and resources to enhance student outcomes.
- Share responsibility for, and be proactive in the day to day management of the assigned Year levels
Manage Student Welfare
- Work in collaboration with Head of Learning and Teaching and the Deputy Director, Junior School to monitor, analyse
and improve student wellbeing outcomes
- Establish effective communication channels with parents and students regarding daily routines, College expectations
and student activities e.g. via noticeboards, electronic communication and Neighbourhood meetings.
- Organise procedures to act upon solicited and unsolicited feedback from staff on behaviour (within the framework of
the Student Management Policy)
- In consultation with the Director, ELC and Junior School, Junior School referral group, and support teams, liaise with
parents regarding general student welfare issues
- In conjunction with learning enrichment team, teachers, staff and parents, identify students with specific social,
emotional or learning needs and respond to these needs
- Monitor student performance including attendance, academic progress, co-curricular involvement and demeanour
- Consult formally and informally with the learning enrichment team
- Raise awareness within the student body of the College's harassment policy and issues of mutual respect and tolerance
- Ensure students operate safely within the framework of College and Year level expectations
- Monitor the number and kind of activities an individual and group of students engage in over the year to build a culture
of involvement and engagement
- Celebrate achievements in the extra curriculum program.
- Maintain Communication Logs
- Participate in the formal handover to the following Year level Team Leader
- Coordinate Team level meetings
Lead and Support Level Teachers
- Model effective teaching practice, with special emphasis on the use of ICT in the classroom
- Proactively support effective teaching practices
- Provide mediation support between teachers and students and teachers and parents
- Communicate pastoral issues affecting students to class teachers
- Provide strategies on matters of classroom discipline, students with special needs and communication with parents
Contribute to College Management Team
- Liaise with any Year level specific parent representative bodies and participate in their activities
- Attend regular meetings with Director, ELC and Junior School, Head of Learning and Teaching and the Deputy Director,
Junior School and Team Leaders to discuss students of concern and plan action lines
- Ensure that College expectations are followed
- Ensure all relevant information for staff is disseminated appropriately
- Actively develop plans and support programs for the development of students
- Analyse policy and issues that have an impact on the Year level and on the College as a whole
- Understanding that some time outside of School hours may be required to complete the work of the Junior School
Leadership Team
Additional duties of the Upper Primary Team Leader
- Student Leadership application process
- Transition statements for Year 6 student interview with Head of Senior School and statements for students heading to
other schools
- Planning for, organization of, implementation of the Canberra camp
- Year 6 celebration dinner – liaise with venue, parent helpers, students to plan the night and the performances involved
- Meet with the Senior School Learning Support Coordinator to discuss the needs of all Yr 6 students transitioning to the
Senior School
- Work with the Junior School P.E/Sport Coordinator to co-ordinate the Yr 5/6 Interschool Sport program
- Junior School Leadership meetings – attend and help students follow through on actions
- Liaise with Senior School Module teachers and Science staff about the delivery of the Yr 5/6 program
- Liaise with House Music coordinators about rehearsal times, involvement of 5/6 students in House Music
- Organisation of the Year 6 Rugby tops
Selection Criteria
Experience
Demonstrated experience:
- Working within evidence based wellbeing practices
- Understanding of various student learning styles
- Effectively dealing with Primary aged students, parents, College management and teaching staff in a variety of contexts
- Working knowledge and understanding of psychometric testing (preferred).
- Involvement in, or contributions to, the school community beyond the classroom
- Evidence of regular involvement in professional learning
Skills and attributes
- Understanding of how students learn, and use of teaching practices that foster student learning
- Use of appropriate learning technologies to enhance student outcomes
- Ability to assess and evaluate student learning
- Capacity to accommodate different student learning styles and abilities
- Ability to develop constructive relationships with students which engender positive attitudes to learning
- High level communication and interpersonal skills when relating to students, parents and staff
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Knowledge of child safe practices, including reporting requirements
Qualifications and Employer Requirements
- Appropriate qualifications for the role - Further study, which might complement the position (e.g. management or post-
graduate studies in student welfare)
- Clearance to work with children - registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)
- Entitled to live and work in Australia
- Current First Aid Certificate
- A commitment and capacity to contribute to the College's co-curricular program
- Completion of Protecting Children – Mandatory Reporting and Other Obligations (training provided by DoE Victoria)
