Your impact
We are looking for archaeologists with a passion for finding heritage-positive solutions. With a strong pipeline of work across Australia, and particularly in Victoria, we are seeking Project Archaeologists to join our team in Melbourne/regional Victoria in casual roles.
Our Jacobs Cultural Heritage team comprises heritage specialists Australia-wide with experience in Aboriginal archaeology, historical archaeology, maritime archaeology, underwater archaeology, interpretation, and built heritage and architecture. We work on projects from large-scale multi-disciplinary infrastructure developments to smaller heritage-specific projects. Our key clients include state government road, rail and transport agencies, infrastructure construction contractors, water utilities companies, local government and Commonwealth government departments. We provide heritage advice across many different stages in a project lifecycle – from business case inputs and early design phase considerations, to undertaking assessments for heritage approvals and providing construction phase support. We love that we have the opportunity to find solutions that take heritage values, our clients and key stakeholders into consideration.
For our casual roles, we are looking for individuals who absolutely love fieldwork, are Victorian Registered Heritage Advisors with First People – State Relations, with appropriate experience to supervise archaeological excavations, and are confident in leading teams of people. Our projects include both those commutable from most Melbourne locations, and away work (accommodation and meals would be provided for the latter). You will have well developed Aboriginal heritage identification skills; be competent with field-based survey methodology; and able to independently undertake field-based excavations.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to –
- Leading and supporting the delivery of Victorian Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plans;
- Supervision and undertaking heritage assessments, significance assessments and Cultural Heritage Management Plans;
- Overseeing portfolios of projects and preparing proposals for some of our key clients; and
- Ownership and responsibility for independently writing heritage reports and assessments, and preparing more complex heritage reports and assessment with guidance from more experienced staff.
Additional responsibilities include providing proposal inputs, leading projects and working with team members to support small to large heritage projects for a range of clients across the water, energy, renewables, government, road and rail sectors.
Here's what you'll need
- Victorian Registered Heritage Advisor with the appropriate qualifications and experience to lead fieldwork in accordance with the requirements of the new Minister's Guidelines
- Honours or postgraduate degree in a relevant subject (e.g. heritage management, archaeology)
- Consulting experience, with a focus on Aboriginal heritage in Victoria
- Applied knowledge of State and Commonwealth heritage legislation and relevant guidelines
- Excellent research and site analysis skills
- Excellent writing and reporting skills
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Excellent collaboration skills
