About the role:

The First Nations Health Worker Traineeship Program (FNHWTP) aims to certify up to 500 First Nations individuals across Australia as either Aboriginal Health Workers or Aboriginal Health Practitioners by 2027. In the Northern Territory, the Jurisdictional Traineeship Coordinator will support trainees and AMSANT Member Services to engage with and successfully complete a Certificate III or Certificate IV Aboriginal and Torres Strait Isander Primary Health Care and workplace traineeship activities, in conjunction with multiple stakeholders. Activities will include face to face and remote support to members and trainees, as well as advocacy activities to improve access to training and funding as needs and gaps are identified over the life of the Program. The position will work closely with similar workforce programs underway within AMSANT.

Responsibilities

  • Project manage and coordinate AMSANT's First Nations Health Worker Traineeship Program in line with the Program Framework.
  • Promote the Program to Member Services and support them to identify and enrol trainees, including assistance with enrolment and linking to additional funding opportunities.
  • Maintain close contact (through online and face to face visits) with Member Services to ensure appropriate processes and conditions are in place in relation to work placements including:
  • trainee on boarding and enrolment processes
  • safe work practices, including culturally safe working environment
  • appropriate level of support and supervision available to all trainees at workplace
  • Lead and participate in advocacy and information sharing activities to improve access to VET education, training and funding opportunities for emerging First Nations health workers.
  • Participate in regular meetings with NACCHO, including JTC Community of Practice meetings.
  • Manage and coordinate all administrative processes, ensuring all documentation and reporting is completed at a high level and in a timely manner.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and other meetings as required within AMSANT.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the level of the position as directed to meet team and AMSANT objectives.

Selection Requirements (Qualifications & Attributes)

ESSENTIAL

  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, histories and principles of the Aboriginal community controlled health sector.
  • Demonstrate an ability to effectively communicate and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a culturally appropriate and respectful manner.
  • Tertiary qualification and/or experience in Health or Human Services or the equivalent level of expertise in the Aboriginal community controlled sector, or health sector, gained from a combination of experience, training, skills and personal attributes.
  • Possess an understanding of factors that promote successful completion of accredited studies by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in the Northern Territory
  • Proven ability to coordinate projects and simultaneous activities, including the ability to work independently to coordinate and deliver multiple projects with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to effectively engage with a diverse range of organisations and individuals at all levels and linking trainees to professional support.
  • Ability to regularly travel within the NT and interstate. This can include by road or light aircraft.

DESIRABLE

  • Attained Certificate IV Training and Assessment qualification, and/or experience in a training role.
  • Knowledge of VET sector, preferably in the NT.
  • Detailed knowledge of and understanding of the work of AMSANT and the Aboriginal community controlled health sector.
