Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.
Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the 'Courts Group'.

The Supreme Court of Victoria is the highest court in Victoria and comprises the Court of Appeal and the Trial Division. The Court deals with major criminal and civil matters, plus appeals against decisions of lower courts.

About the Role
This lawyer role sits within the Appeals & Crime arm of the Supreme Court Registry and will primarily support the work of the Court of Appeal (Civil) under the supervision of the Principal and Senior Lawyers. Lawyers work closely with judicial officers and their chambers, to actively case manage civil appellate cases, regularly communicate with internal and external stakeholders and act as a contact point for parties and other stakeholders in relation to civil applications and appeals before the Court.
Key accountabilities include:
- actively case manage civil appellate cases to ensure they are progressed efficiently
- review, analyse and synthesise case material
- draft correspondence, and prepare legal and factual memoranda, summaries and chronologies
- draft directions and orders
- oversee the preparation of appeal books for consideration of judicial officers
- provide procedural guidance to court-users including self represented litigants and solicitors
- provide recommendations to the Registrar and judicial officers on case management, listing and requests for expedition
- liaise with other court staff and provide guidance in respect of Court of Appeal cases
Please note: This is a part-time (3 days per week) fixed term position until March 2027. The successful candidate will work closely with an experienced civil lawyer in a job share arrangement, 3 days per week (preferred working days of Monday, Wednesday and Thursday) with the possibility of additional days offered during peak periods.
About You
- excellent written and oral communication skills
- strong attention to detail
- high level interpersonal and organisational/planning skills
- tertiary qualification in law and admitted to practice (note: a current practising certificate is not required)
- post-admission experience in corporations law, commercial litigation, personal injury, insolvency or administrative law is highly desirable
