The opportunity
We are seeking a Technician CNC – Engineering Services to join CSIRO's CBIS (Business & Infrastructure) Engineering Services team. The team plays a key role in streamlining the research process by providing essential engineering services, knowledge, and expertise to reduce project setup time, meet required standards, and ensure the continued technical support for ongoing projects.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with engineering fabrication and CNC machining experience to work on a variety of projects, collaborate with diverse internal stakeholders, and contribute to cutting-edge scientific research. As a member of a multidisciplinary team, you'll play an integral role in developing, maintaining, and improving the systems that support CSIRO's innovative research.
Your high-level duties will include:
- Fabricating, machining or fitting parts to be used by scientific research projects.
- Working with internal customers to develop best systems for their research and delivering projects on time.
- Contributing to current projects, including input on design and fabrication, material use and manufacturing methods.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Contributing to initiatives to improve cost, quality, compliance, capability and customer service.

Salary: AU$73k – AU$93k per annum (pro rata for part-time), plus 15.4% superannuation

As the successful candidate, you will bring:
- Relevant trade certificate/diploma/degree or relevant work experience in Engineering Fitter Machinist.
- Demonstrated experience in the operation and set of CNC machining.
- High level interpersonal skills, with an ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary support team of staff and contractors.
- The ability to effectively manage competing priorities simultaneously and carry out non-routine tasks under general direction in support of scientific research.
- Demonstrated experience in performing machining, milling, lather turning, grinding and related tasks and to manufacture parts per engineering designs using various materials under minimal supervision.
- Ability to provide technical input and engage in technical interchange with researchers on the mechanical design, prototyping, development, manufacture and installation of mechanisms and equipment relating to research systems.
- Demonstrated experience in setting up complex or intricate machining that involves programming, inspection, diagnoses and modification of works in a computerised machining centre within a workshop.
- Ability to lead projects and provide technical support and advice to other team members within the workshop including assistance in the allocation and prioritisation of work.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to investigate routine problems, identify issues and risks, and provide alternative solutions.
