About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Technical Officer to join a leading Melbourne-based institution's Chemistry & Life Sciences team. This full-time, continuing position offers an opportunity to support teaching and research activities in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Laboratory Operations: Oversee the safe and efficient operation of Chemistry laboratories, ensuring compliance with current Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation, regulations, and standards.
  • Equipment Management: Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments and equipment relevant to Chemistry and Life Sciences disciplines.
  • Safety Compliance: Manage the safe use, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials and waste, adhering to environmental and safety protocols.
  • Technical Support: Provide expert technical advice and support to academic staff, researchers, and students, facilitating practical classes and experiments.
  • Training & Induction: Develop and deliver training materials and inductions for laboratory users, ensuring all personnel are informed of safety procedures and equipment usage.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, safety audits, and compliance checks.
Selection Criteria
  • OHS Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of current OHS legislation with an emphasis on regulations, standards, and safe practices relating to a Chemistry laboratory.
  • Laboratory Experience: Proven experience operating and maintaining laboratory-based instruments and equipment relevant to a Chemistry laboratory.
  • Hazardous Materials Handling: Experience working in a Chemistry laboratory setting, including the safe use and handling of hazardous materials and waste.
  • Communication Skills: Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and engage with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Qualifications: Tertiary qualification in Chemistry or a related discipline and/or relevant experience.
