About the Role
You are a motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant who will play a key role in the day-to-day running of the laboratory. You will work independently to coordinate laboratory-based clinical trials, manage specimens and data, and ensure the highest standards of laboratory maintenance and compliance.
Coordinate the collection, preparation, and transport of clinical specimens in line with protocol requirements
Maintain a sterile and well-resourced laboratory environment, including cleaning and equipment upkeep
Conduct routine tests and analyses, and manage databases of clinical processing
Liaise with clinical trial groups regarding the coordination and running of studies
Provide support to students and colleagues in laboratory techniques, experimental design, and administrative processes (including ethics)
The classification for this position will be IV8 ($62,540.40 per annum, pro rata for part time.)
Your Contribution
Degree or relevant tertiary qualification in laboratory technology, with experience in a laboratory environment
Proven ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a team
Strong organisational, analytical and interpersonal skills
Experience in running and participating in clinical trials
Proficiency in the use of relevant computer software and databases
Current National Criminal History Check, or willingness to obtain
Desirable: Demonstrated ability to perform a range of research techniques, including PBMC isolation, immunofluorescent staining, flow cytometry, ELISA, molecular biology and cell culture.

Position Description
The Immunology Research Centre is part of St Vincent's Hospital (Melbourne) and is a collaborative
laboratory in partnership with The University of Melbourne specialising in the innate immune system and
infectious diseases research. For more information, please visit
POSITION PURPOSE
The aim of the position is to assist with day-to-day maintenance of the laboratory and work
independently in coordinating laboratory based clinical trials, preparing clinical specimens for transport,
coordinating and maintaining ethics and ensuring careful and accurate specimen storage.
POSITION DUTIES
The primary duties of the Medical Laboratory Technician are:
Coordinate blood or specimen sample collection/preparation to meet protocol requirements
Clean equipment and maintain a sterile laboratory environment to meet protocol requirements
Ensure the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced
Conduct routine tests and analysis of samples
Manage database of clinical processing
Manage the set up of laboratory equipment or tests to meet protocol requirements x Log blood or specimen
Lab clinical management of clinical trials
Liasion with clinical trial groups about the running of various clinical trials
Assist PhD and Masters student as needed in laboratory techniques and experimental design
Administrative support especially in relation to ethics
INCUMBENT OBLIGATIONS
Perform duties of the position to best of their ability and to a standard acceptable to SVHM
Comply with all SVHM policies, procedures, by laws and directions

Clinical Quality and Safety
Attend clinical orientation upon commencement
Maintain clinical registration and any required indemnity cover
Always work within approved scope of practice under supervision by more senior clinical staff as appropriate.
Take personal responsibility for the quality and safety of work undertaken
Take all necessary care and precautions when undertaking clinical procedures
Complete annual clinical competencies
Maintain skills and knowledge necessary to safely and skilfully undertake clinical work
Consult with peers and other experts and refer to other healthcare workers when appropriate and in a timely manner
Collaborate and clearly communicate with patients/clients and the healthcare team
Participate in clinical risk management and continuous quality improvement activities as part of day-to-day work
Ensure consumers receive information in an appropriate and accessible format
Actively support consumers to make informed decisions about their treatment and ongoing care
Ensure consumers are aware of their rights responsibilities and how to provide feedback
Protect the health and safety of self and others, complying with all health and safety related policies, procedures and directions
Complete required Fire and Emergency Training annually
Complete required Workplace Culture and Equity Training annually
Attend general hospital orientation within 3 months of commencement
As required, comply with fit-testing and PPE requirements
Participate in reporting and analysis of safety and quality data including risks or hazards,
Report any hazards, near misses and incidents (regardless of whether an injury occurred or not) into Riskman
Identify and report any variance to expected standard and minimising the risk of adverse outcomes
