Canberra, ACT, Australia Secure Bits Pty Ltd Full time $80,000 - $120,000 per year

About Secure Bits

At Secure Bits, we are on a mission to empower Australia's defence and manufacturing industries by delivering cutting-edge, innovative solutions. Established with a passion for advancing sovereign capability, we have become a trusted name in the Defence, Security, Intelligence and Environment sectors.

From rapid prototyping to complex systems integration, our expertise supports national security, technological innovation, and the growth of Australia's sovereign manufacturing capacity. We pride ourselves on fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and dynamic workplace where every team member can contribute to meaningful projects and grow their skills.

We are also proud to be a Veteran Employment Supporter, committed to creating opportunities for veterans and actively supporting Defence Reservists in balancing their service commitments.

About the role

The Graduate Electronics Design Engineer will join our multidisciplinary engineering team to support the design, development, and testing of advanced electronic systems and components. Working closely with senior engineers, you'll contribute to schematic capture, PCB layout, firmware development, and system integration activities.

You'll also take the lead in coordinating day-to-day activities in our Engineering Laboratory (ELab), including supervising apprentices and junior technical staff, ensuring design quality, and supporting production readiness for small-batch electronics projects.

What are we looking for?

You'll have a genuine passion for turning ideas into real, working solutions, a curious mind that's always asking "how can we make this better?", and the confidence to work hands-on in a lab environment. If you thrive on solving problems, collaborating with a team of experienced engineers, and aren't afraid to roll up your sleeves to get the job done, you'll fit right in.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, or Embedded Systems Engineering.

  • Australian citizenship with eligibility for AGSVA NV1 security clearance.

  • Foundational understanding of analog, digital, or mixed-signal circuit design.

  • Ability to assist in identifying and resolving technical issues.

  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn.

  • Collaborative mindset in a multidisciplinary team environment.

What desirable attributes should you have?

You've experimented with schematic capture and PCB layout tools such as Altium Designer or KiCAD, and you're comfortable diving into embedded programming for platforms like STM32 or embedded Linux. You might have explored mechanical CAD tools for designing enclosures or component fit, or coordinated small project teams in a university or technical lab setting. If you've tinkered with your own electronics projects, solved complex design challenges, or taken a leadership role in hands-on builds, you'll be right at home here.

Key responsibilities

In this role, you won't just be following instructions — you'll be part of a team turning concepts into real-world solutions. Your work will touch every stage of the electronics design lifecycle, giving you hands-on experience that will set you up for a rewarding career. You'll:

  • Design, build, and test analog and digital electronic circuits that power real products.

  • Bring concepts to life through schematic capture and PCB layout using tools like Altium Designer or KiCAD.

  • Get hands-on with embedded firmware development, from coding to debugging for platforms such as STM32 or embedded Linux.

  • Collaborate with mechanical, fabrication, and software specialists to integrate hardware and software into complete systems.

  • Document your work — designs, specifications, and test results — so we can refine, improve, and replicate success.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with the guidance of senior engineers, sharpening your problem-solving skills.

  • Take ownership of day-to-day operations in our Engineering Laboratory (ELab), keeping projects moving and quality high.

  • Lead and mentor apprentices and junior technical staff, helping them learn and grow while you do the same.

  • Ensure all work meets our high standards for safety, compliance, and reliability.

Workplace environment

You'll work between our office and our Electronics Laboratory (ELab), a hands-on space where ideas quickly become working prototypes.

  • Use modern tools and equipment like oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, soldering stations, and PCB layout software.

  • Be involved in real prototyping, testing, and integration projects from start to finish.

  • Oversee automated electronics manufacturing line and collaborate with engineers and technicians who are passionate about solving problems.

  • Work safely and effectively in a supportive, well-organised environment.

Why join us?

If you are seeking a workplace where your ideas and efforts truly matter, Secure Bits is the place for you. Here, you'll find the chance to work on transformative projects that shape the future of Australia's defence and manufacturing industries, all while being part of a supportive and forward-thinking team.

At Secure Bits, we offer:

  • Competitive salary and benefits: We value your expertise and reward you accordingly.

  • Professional growth opportunities: From training programs to mentorship, we invest in your future.

  • A supportive workplace culture: Join a team that values diversity, inclusion, and collaboration.

  • Impactful projects: Work on initiatives that contribute to Australia's national security and technological advancement.

  • Flexibility and innovation: Embrace a culture where new ideas are welcomed, and flexible work arrangements are supported.
