Overview

Cognesis is preparing to deliver a significant package of work to advance integrated simulation and autonomy capabilities for maritime platforms. We are seeking expressions of interest from experienced Robotics Software Engineers with strong skills in
ROS 2
and the
Gazebo
robotic software framework.

The successful candidate will join Cognesis' national delivery team, with this role primarily based in Sydney, working collaboratively to produce high-quality, sovereign solutions for Defence.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and extend simulation environments using
    ROS 2
    and
    Gazebo
    , integrating with existing software and autonomy frameworks.
  • Adapt, integrate, and extend autonomy systems for autonomous underwater vehicles, including sensing, navigation, and communication components.
  • Collaborate on the development of combat system and geospatial simulation interfaces, ensuring robust modelling and data exchange.
  • Test and validate software in both simulation and sea trial contexts, contributing to planning, execution, and analysis.
  • Apply industry-standard software engineering techniques and modern development tools to maintain, improve, and document simulation software.
  • Contribute to the evolution of Cognesis' internal simulation capability, with a focus on scalability and reusability across projects.
  • Participate in team design reviews, demos, and knowledge-sharing sessions to ensure quality and continuous improvement.

Essential Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree in Software, Electronics, Electrical, Mechatronics, Robotics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong skills and practical experience in
    ROS 2
    and
    Gazebo
    , with a focus on extending robotic simulation frameworks.
  • Proficiency in
    C++
    and
    Python
    programming for simulation and autonomy systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in simulation, modelling, and/or control of robotic or autonomous systems.
  • Familiarity with defence-style engineering processes, including verification and validation of mission-critical software.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team, following structured development processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to document and present technical outcomes clearly.
  • Active/Reinstatable NV1 Security Clearance.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with naval or maritime platforms, especially in autonomy, sensing, or navigation systems.
  • Familiarity with combat system simulation, geospatial data systems, or distributed simulation frameworks.
  • Practical exposure to testing robotic/autonomous systems in field or sea-trial environments.
  • Background in developing software for mission-critical or safety-critical systems.
