Purpose
The Team Leader Environmental Health is responsible for effectively leading, coaching, and
motivating an Environmental Health team to develop, implement, promote and coordinate
a broad range of environmental health activities and programs.
The Team Leader is responsible for promoting and enhancing public and environmental
health in the community and environment, through education, prevention and
enforcement.
The Team Leader will support Environmental Health Officers to provide information, conduct
inspections, investigate complaints and issues directions under legislation. This leadership
role will contribute in a positive and energetic manner as part of the Development and
Regulatory Services leadership team, broader City Development and CoM leadership team,
other council departments, a range of organisations and the community.

and efficiently in the scope of your daily work.
Key Deliverables
- Manage the team's regulatory and inspectorial regime, including the team's
adherence with inspection schedules, instigation of compliance action as required
and ensuring adequate documentation is captured and retained in accordance with
statutory requirements.
- Develop and lead the implementation of work area business planning, ensuring these
plans align and meet the strategic direction and statutory obligations of Council.
- Providing specialist and accurate public health advice to management, Elected
Members and general staff, including the undertaking of inspections.
- Interpret, apply and enforce relevant legislation and guidelines by conducting
inspections, investigating complaints, and providing information and
education, namely under: Food Act, Regulations, Guidelines and Food
Standards Code
South Australian Public Health Act and associated Regulations and Guidelines
Supported Residential Facilities Act and Regulations and Guidelines
Environment Protection Act (Water Quality Policy)
Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act.
Local Government Act
Lead the team and manage the design, implementation, measurement and reporting
of systems which deliver a customer experience that is effortless and exceeds our

- Provide reports as required on the activities of the department (including KPI
monitoring).
- Prepare reports to the State Government to ensure statutory requirements and
external funding agreements are met.
- Develop and manage the budget of the Environmental Health Team, including the
submission of project budget bids and financial reporting.
- Develop and enhance public and environmental health information and promotional
materials.
- Undertake other reasonable duties relevant to this position.
Person Specification
Essential criteria
- Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Health or equivalent, as recognised by the
South Australian Minister for Health.
Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation and conflict resolution
skills.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply legislation and make decisions to
implement appropriate actions including conducting inspections, investigating
complaints and gathering evidence and information.
- Comprehensive knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge of,
relevant legislation including the South Australian Public Health Act, Food Act,
Supported Residential Facilities Act, Environmental Protection Act (Water Quality
Policy) and Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act.
- Demonstrated ability to use initiative to apply legislation and have the ability to
effectively analyse information and make appropriate decisions and
recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to provide a high level of customer service skills in a regulatory
environment.
Sound knowledge of public health and food safety matters.
Excellent time management skills with the ability to manage workloads and

- Must be either an Australian resident or possess the legal right to work in Australia,
with the ability to provide documentation of a valid work visa.
- Comply with existing Work, Health and Safety legislation and regulation obligations and
apply "Think Safe Live Well" philosophy.
- Embrace ethical and moral behavior and report any suspected instances of fraud
and/or corruption in accordance with Fraud and Corruption Management and the
Code of Conduct.

Other conditions specific to the role
- Must hold a valid, full (unrestricted) driver's license in accordance with South
Australian requirements.
Working in the field with minimal supervision is required.
Occasional out-of-hours work will be required.
This is a prescribed position as defined by the City of Marion Safe Environments for
Children and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Therefore, incumbent must:
o Promote and maintain a child safe environment and take relevant actions in
accordance with council's Safe Environments for Children and Vulnerable
Persons Policy and with legislative requirements under the Children and Young
People (Safety) Act 2017 and the Child Safety (Prohibited Persons) Act 2016.
o Satisfactorily complete a DHS Working with Children Check (to be renewed
every five years) and be willing to undertake Child Safe Training.
