Canteen exists to support young people and their families impacted by cancer. Founded by young cancer patients, we provide counselling, programs and resources that empower 12–25 year olds to navigate their cancer experience and rebuild their lives.

About Our Role

  • As a key member of Canteen's psychosocial team, you'll deliver high-quality, evidence-based support to young people aged 12–25, helping them navigate the emotional, social and practical challenges that come with a cancer experience, whether their own or that of a loved one.
  • You'll work one-on-one with young people to understand their needs, set meaningful goals, and provide ongoing therapeutic and practical support. Alongside this, you'll play a vital role in connecting Canteen to the wider community, building strong relationships with hospitals, schools, and local networks to ensure young people and families know where to turn for help.
  • Your creativity and energy will also shine through in program delivery, from facilitating discussion groups and workshops to supporting the design and evaluation of camps and therapeutic programs that foster connection, resilience and hope.
  • Most importantly, you'll create safe spaces where young people feel heard, supported, and empowered to thrive, at their own pace and in their own way.

About You

  • Tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or related Allied Health Field.
  • Eligibility for membership/registration with a relevant professional body (e.g. AASW, AHPRA, PACFA).
  • Demonstrated experience in providing individual and group-based psychosocial support.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with young people and families.
  • Current Working with Children Check and National Police Check (or willingness to obtain).
  • A proactive and positive attitude with a willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
  • Warm, compassionate, and friendly approach to supporting our young people.
  • Due to the nature of Canteen's work, you will be required to (very) occasionally work weekends and evenings. Advance notice will be given when this is the case, and Canteen does have a Time off in Lieu policy for taking leave as agreed with the supervising manager.
