Queensland Youth Services (QYS) is currently seeking a YPP Assistantfor our Young Parents Program.

  • Salary Level:  Level increment level negotiated based on skills and experience)
  • Award: Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award
  • Location:       Townsville, Queensland
  • Reports to:    Young Parents Program Team Leader
  • Status: Part-Time Fixed Term Contract (31 Dec 2026)

About the Role

The purpose of this role is to empower young people who are parents to make meaningful contributions to their community through mentoring and increased access to training education and employment opportunities. And build the capacity of young families through skills development, information provision and facilitating linkages with support services.


About the Work

  • To assist the coordinator to support an identified group of young parents, through the provision of assistance with transport, lunch and resources for the existing Munchkins Playgroup and Young Parent's Group and assistance with the supervision of children during workshops and courses.
  • To assist the coordinator to facilitate client access to vocational training, education and employment opportunities and access to assistance from organisations and agencies within the Townsville community.
  • To assist in fulfilling funding body reporting requirements, including assistance with data collection and the preparation of periodic reports.

About You

Qualification and Experience:

  • Entry Level Degree (e.g. Social Work, Community Services, Psychology), or
  • Associate diploma with relevant experience in working with youth, and case management practices, or
  • Relevant Vocational Certificate with significant experience in working with youth, and case management practices.
  • Please note it is a funding/program requirement that the successful candidate identify and be accepted by their community and elders as being of First Nations decent (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.)

Essential Requirements

  • Possession of a Suitability Card for Child related employment (BlueCard).
  • Current QLD Driver's License (Manual).
  • Criminal history check
  • Demonstrated understanding of youth issues, and the service delivery required to support and develop young people at risk.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in a culturally appropriate, and sensitive way.

Position Requirements

  • Demonstrated understanding of youth and social justice issues, and the service delivery required to support and develop young people and their families.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues affecting young parents, and child safety intervention
  • Demonstrated understanding of youth and social justice issues that affect young people and their families, and the interventions required to support and address the presenting issues
  • Sound understanding of the Child Protection and Residential Tenancy Acts
  • Knowledge of local service providers and support and referral networks within the community and family welfare sector or ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
  • Experience in the supervision of infants and young children or a sound level of knowledge of childhood development theory and positive parenting practices. Demonstrated understanding of safety issues pertaining to young children.
  • High degree of competency in oral and written communication skills, including working collaboratively with government departments, community agencies, and service providers.
  • Demonstrated skills in case management frameworks. Develop and implement case plans in collaboration with young people, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Undertake and maintain accurate documentation including case notes, report writing and data collection, using the provided client information management system (SRS)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Indigenous Australians, and evidence of understanding the impact of historical events leading to intergenerational trauma.
  • Proven capacity to work with minimal supervision, to work, at times, under pressure and to cope with stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a professional, and ethical manner, particularly with regard to accountabilities, client confidentiality and duty of care issues.
  • Proven capacity to work cooperatively and proactively as an integral part of a team.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness and a strong commitment to self-development
