Barwon Learning Centre is a School for Specific Purposes in a small, regional setting. The school has the capacity to cater for 3 classes with a maximum of 7 students per class; supporting students in years 5 – 12 with emotional disturbances and/or behavioural disorders. Our school offers trauma-informed education programs for a minimum of 20 weeks. We prioritise the development of academic, behavioural, and social skills to support a successful transition back into mainstream schooling or post-school pathways. Our school is committed to providing staff with trauma-informed training and support to ensure that our practices and interactions reflect the needs of our students and school community.
About the role
School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) provide tailored support for students with diverse learning needs, including those with disabilities, within the classroom and other learning environments. Under the direction and supervision of a teacher, SLSOs assist in the achievement of educational outcomes by fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment. This includes supporting students' academic progress, as well as their welfare, health, and wellbeing needs.
SLSOs provide specific support to students, helping to implement individualised learning plans, promote social and communication skills, and manage behaviour where necessary. The SLSO will work closely with the teacher and other support staff to ensure students' unique needs are met and will contribute to the creation of a supportive, structured environment that enhances student engagement and success.
Essential Requirements
- Working with Children Check Clearance
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to work with students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.
- Awareness of the needs of students with emotional, physical or intellectual disabilities.
- Effective communication skills.
