About the Role

We are looking for an Associate level lawyer with 4-5 years' post qualification experience to join our Brisbane office. Ideally coming from an insurance litigation background, this role will offer you further experience acting on behalf of major global insurers and reinsurers as well as construction, engineering and financial professionals.

The opportunity involves working directly with recently named Partner Hannes Marais. Hannes has an extensive background working in all areas of insurance law and acting as defense counsel for professional insureds.

The role offers exposure to a broad range of complex and interesting matters spanning construction and engineering, financial lines, general professional indemnity, and warranty and indemnity (W&I) supporting domestic and overseas insurers in both defense of claims as well as coverage.

At Clyde's your professional development is supported, and the nature and size of this team will allow you to be heavily involved in all aspects of matters and therefore contribute significantly to their outcome.

The successful candidate will be involved in the following work:

  • Defending litigated claims against professionals including engineers, certifiers and other construction professionals, accountants, valuers, and barristers.
  • Advising on coverage and monitoring of claims against professional insureds for both Australian and London based underwriters.
  • Advising clients on policy coverage issues and quantum across various types of insurance, from mid-size losses to large and complex claims.
  • Drafting and reviewing policy wordings and providing advice on areas of legal risk for clients.
  • Assisting in managing and building client relationships, including assisting with business development activities for key existing clients and new clients.

About You

You enjoy working as part of a dynamic and collaborative team, and you will be an established Associate level lawyer in Australia, New Zealand or overseas, particularly the UK, with the following core competencies:

  • A strong litigation background gained from a leading private practice law firm
  • Ideally exposure to some or all of the types of matters detailed above
  • Strong academic credentials, self-driven with excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities effectively
  • Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills, as well as the ability to work independently
  • Commercial awareness and desire to grow and develop under the guidance of the Partner and senior lawyers in building rapport with clients to gain a better understanding of their business' needs
  • Desire to work in a positive team and office atmosphere.
