Payroll Officer – Labour Hire – 12 Months, possible extension
We're looking for a confident and capable Payroll Officer who's ready to take full ownership of payroll operations in a small but dynamic Commonwealth environment. If you're someone who thrives on accuracy, enjoys being the go-to person for pay and conditions advice, and brings a strong service mindset to everything you do; this could be your next move.
In this role, you'll be responsible for managing the end-to-end payroll process on a fortnightly cycle, ensuring compliance with taxation, superannuation, and employment legislation. You'll maintain accurate records, reconcile data, and support reporting requirements including EOFY and audit activities. You'll also be the first point of contact for employee queries—providing clear, timely, and respectful advice on salaries, deductions, entitlements, and conditions.
You'll work closely with the HR Operations Manager and Finance team to support payroll audits, system upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives. Your ability to manage competing priorities, apply sound judgement, and maintain confidentiality will be key to your success.
What we're looking for
You'll bring long-term demonstrated experience individually managing payroll processing, ideally within a small government or complex organisational setting. You may have worked with platforms like Xero, MYOB, or Employment Hero, and you're confident navigating HRIS and payroll systems (ELMO experience is a bonus). You're comfortable with numbers, meticulous with data, and have a solid understanding of employment legislation and compliance reporting.
You're someone who:
- Delivers high-quality work with consistency and care
 - Communicates clearly and professionally, both in writing and in person
 - Maintains discretion and confidentiality at all times
 - Works well independently but also contributes positively to team outcomes
 - Is committed to service excellence and continuous improvement

A relevant qualification in Payroll or HR is preferred, but not essential if you bring the right experience and mindset.
What's great about this one
Step into a role where your expertise is valued, your advice is trusted, and your contribution makes a real impact.
You'll be part of a supportive team, working in a collaborative environment with clear goals and a shared commitment to operational excellence.
As an Elliott Gray labour hire employee, you receive weekly pay and have a small team dedicated to supporting your employment experience with us.
This is a critical business need and is available on a labour hire agreement for 12 months initially with the possibility of extension, or transition to permanent employment.
The hourly rate is reflective of the experience and ownership required and will sit in the range of $ $74.10 inclusive of the 25% casual loading, plus 12% super.
