The role presents an opportunity to contribute to the important work of the Commission and be instrumental in the outcomes of the regulation of Queensland's legal profession.
In this senior legal role at the Commission, Special Counsel Litigation is responsible for leading a team that is central to the performance of the Commissioner's functions under the Legal Profession Act 2007, in directing external engagement and internal performance of the litigation team, together with any other Special Counsel. You will report to the Commissioner and be responsible for handling more complex matters.
In The Role Of Special Counsel Litigation, You Will

- conduct litigation on behalf of the Commissioner, including to prepare, instruct and appear in the Commission's more complex litigation matters, across appeal work, discipline applications, prosecution of summary offences, injunction applications and other enforcement action, as well as conferences and hearings before disciplinary bodies, the courts and other agencies, while adhering to model litigant principles
- manage the briefing and instructing of counsel from the private bar, and managing other outsourced legal work with solicitors and barristers in private practice
- review, develop and, where necessary, drive complex legislative and policy change designed to enhance the Commission's undertaking of its statutory obligations and regulatory functions
- proactively monitor and, where appropriate, improve policies, procedures, work practice and management systems to enable the Commission to continually improve effective and efficient standards of service
- advise, mentor, and support the litigation team by actively fostering a team operating environment built on a good work ethic, interactive, consistent work practice, and quality results
- be admitted as an Australian lawyer and be eligible to obtain a practising certificate in Queensland
- abide by the Australian Solicitor Conduct Rules (and/or Barristers' Conduct Rules where relevant) and display high standards of professional ethical conduct at all times, in addition to any other professional obligations
- be responsible for a number of statutory delegations on behalf of the Commissioner from time to time
- be required to travel and stay away from home overnight within Queensland to attend Court or Tribunal hearings. A current driver licence is required for travelling to appearances at Court or Tribunal hearings outside the Brisbane CBD.
As a member of the Commission's senior leadership team you will:
- provide leadership and appropriate management of the Commission's resources to ensure its statutory powers, obligations, and functions under the Act are appropriately applied
- provide oversight of the Commission's strategic and litigation performance
- provide professional representation of the Commissioner at external forums and meetings.
We recognise the importance of work-life balance and offer flexible work arrangements. We encourage staff to develop and broaden their skills, including through professional development opportunities, mentoring, and exposure to diverse and meaningful work to support you to succeed professionally and personally.
