The Bureau is Australia's weather, climate, water, oceans and space weather agency. Our work touches the lives of all Australians every day. Our products and services include observations, forecasts, warnings, analysis and advice. They cover Australia's atmosphere, water, oceans and space environments.
The Bureau's Research Program delivers world-class research aligned with the Bureau Strategy and the Research and Development Plan. It enables the development of weather and climate applications for the needs of the Australian community, supporting the Bureau's operational services, and advancing meteorological and earth system science in Australia and globally.
As a Computational Scientist within the Next Generation Modelling team, you will be involved in supporting and developing the Bureau's next generation of weather modelling systems. These systems are developed in an international collaboration with partner meteorological organisations. You will contribute to the development and installation of these systems on Australian high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. This work will include but is not limited to: testing, profiling, bug fixes, porting, task configuration and automation. You will be utilising the domain-specific language PSyclone for this work, and also contribute portability improvements to the new build system Fab.
You will be supporting our scientists with ongoing development and usage of the models and will be driving change that accelerates the Bureau's ability to rapidly update and improve our forecasting systems using modern software design and development methodologies. You will be documenting your work, and help training scientists in using these next generation models. You will also be supporting machine learning applications with the help of subject matter experts.
We are looking for an innovative and highly motivated software developer to join the team. The ideal candidate will possess strong software development skills, experience working with large and complex scientific codes, the ability to develop effective working relationships across multi-disciplinary teams within the program. Through training and on-the-job learning, you will become an expert in the next generation of models and be part of the team that will deliver improved forecasts and services to all of Australia.
To be successful you will:
- Have demonstrated programming and scripting skills in a Linux environment.
- Be able to work through complex problems in complex environments.
- Demonstrate that you work successfully in a distributed team-based workplace to deliver project outcomes, whilst having the confidence to develop and test your own ideas.
- Have well-developed liaison, communication, and documentation skills.
- Have an ability to innovate and quickly respond to customer requirements.
