Expressions of Interest – Animal Ethics Committee Members (Category C & D)

Organisation: The University of Melbourne

Location: Melbourne, Victoria (meetings in person and/or via video conference)

The University of Melbourne is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified individuals to join its Animal Ethics Committees (AECs) in the following categories:

  • Category D – Independent Members

Individuals with no prior involvement in the care and use of animals for scientific or teaching purposes and independent of the University.

About the University's AECs

The University's AECs review and monitor all research and teaching activities involving animals to ensure they are ethically acceptable, scientifically justified, and conducted in compliance with the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (8th edition, 2013) and relevant Victorian legislation.

Working in partnership with the Office of Research Ethics and Integrity (OREI), the AECs also monitor animal facilities, inspect licensed premises, and promote a Culture of Care across the University.

Role and Responsibilities

AEC members:

  • Review applications for ethical approval, bringing their category-specific perspective.
  • Attend and contribute to scheduled AEC meetings (11 per year, plus possible supplementary meetings).
  • Participate in annual and/or targeted inspections of animal facilities, where possible.
  • Monitor approved projects and ensure compliance with the Code and relevant legislation.
  • Undertake training and maintain awareness of current community expectations about animal welfare.

What We Offer

  • Access to internal and external training opportunities.
  • Access to University library resources.
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to animal welfare and world-class research.
  • An honorarium to assist with costs incurred in your role (e.g., portable device for reviewing documents, travel, parking, training, and conference attendance).
