This is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander identified position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact

As a valued member of the Greater Sydney Aboriginal Tenancy Services (GSATS), you'll play a key role in supporting mob with tenancy advice, advocacy, and community education, assisting clients with housing matters, liaising with services, and representing clients at NCAT.

Each day, you will:

  • Provide tenancy advice, advocacy, and community education to Aboriginal tenants and clients.
  • Identify client needs and develop strategies to improve access to tenancy services.
  • Represent and support tenants at NCAT hearings and liaise with relevant services and networks.
  • Maintain records, reporting, and community education data in line with funding requirements.
  • Contribute to tenancy law reform, policy development, and continuous professional training.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, promoting ethical practices and culturally appropriate service delivery.

Your Story & Strengths

You are a dedicated and skilled Tenant Advocate who understands and respects the cultural, social, and historical experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You bring expertise in tenancy advice, advocacy, and community engagement, combined with a strong commitment to supporting your community and promoting justice.

Key strengths include:

  • Must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted by mob, with a strong understanding and respect for cultural, social, and community needs.
  • Knowledge of tenancy services, relevant legislation, housing issues, and support/referral services for Aboriginal clients.
  • Experience delivering community education and outreach programs.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Commitment to ethical practices, workplace health & safety, and diversity.
  • Willingness to travel regionally as required; NSW driver's license essential; experience in Aboriginal community or tenancy services desirable.
