About the role

We are currently seeking a Senior Engineer Hydrology & Hydraulics to join NSW Public Works, within the Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development.

The role will report to the Principal Engineer, Dams, and will be responsible for undertaking projects across a broad range of related disciplines.

One week you might be undertaking PMF modelling a dam break study for our Dams Investigation and Design Team. The next you might be required to undertake a Flood Impact report (Floodplain Risk Management Plan or equivalent) for new infrastructure to be included in an environmental assessment. Additionally, you will find yourself studying riverine hydraulics for a bank stability project, modelling an urban drainage system, or if you're really experienced, preparing a Secure Yield analysis for town water security and then mapping an impounded area. Occasionally you will also procure and manage a consultant undertaking some of these tasks or undertake technical peer review of the works of others to identify knowledge gaps and / or value for service suiting the needs of our clients.

About you

You will have 8 – 12 years professional experience, mostly in Australia particularly focusing on NSW hydrology, and have proven expertise in undertaking and reporting on hydrologic and hydraulic investigations. You will be ambitious and patient in building a flood modelling team, within an appropriate timeframe determined with you, the Principal and the Director, to eventually serve all the different disciplined services lines under NSW Public Works.

We would expect that you will have expert knowledge in the hydrologic methods in Australian Rainfall & Runoff, including statistical hydrology, climate change modelling and also demonstrative expertise using any or all of:

  • RAFTS, WBNM, DRAINS or equivalent hydrologic modelling software
  • TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, or equivalent 2D hydraulic modelling software
  • GIS (ESRI, QGIS or equivalent platforms) including ArcHydro or Catchment SIM

An Engineering degree, or equivalent demonstrable level of skill and experience is required (10 to 15 years+ modelling experience), including recent experience in the design and delivery of floodplain risk management plans, dam break studies, etc. Chartered Professional Engineer is preferred.

You will be required to build and maintain strong relationships both within and outside Public Works, have capacity to work with management, staff and clients exhibiting strong stakeholder management skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with high level interpersonal skills are essential including the ability to facilitate meetings and training sessions will be required.

You must have a current NSW Driver Licence and willingness to drive to and work in remote locations which may include overnight stays.
