Ballarat Wildlife Park is a fully ZAA accredited wildlife park based in the city of Ballarat less than 1.5 hours from Melbourne CBD. Established in 1985 we have a long, rich history with a particular focus on reptiles and house a broad variety of both native and exotic reptile and amphibian species including:

  • Crocodilians – Saltwater crocodile, Freshwater crocodile, American alligator
  • Komodo dragons and other Varanid species
  • Venomous snakes including Taipan, Cobra and Rattlesnake species
  • Large constrictors – Reticulated pythons, Burmese pythons
  • Poison dart frogs

We are seeking an applicant with previous reptile experience within a zoo setting, safety focus, ability to deliver high quality animal husbandry and commitment to animal conservation. The applicant should also be clean, tidy and organised with high personal standards of care and presentation.

The position will have a 6-month probationary period based predominantly on the reptile department and reporting to the Head of Reptiles.

Requirements
:

This is a full-time 38-hour position (5 days per week) and will involve work on weekends and public holidays.

Prerequisites:

  • Experience with the care of reptile and amphibians in a wildlife park/zoo setting.
  • Knowledge of the husbandry and biology of reptiles and amphibians including crocodilians
  • Understanding of heating, filtration systems and water quality
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to work a variable roster that includes weekends and public holidays
  • Excellent personal presentation and a good level of fitness
  • A strong, safety-conscious focus.
  • Good record keeping, time management and observational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively, both individually and in a small team setting
  • Effective public speaking skills, and a willingness to conduct engaging public presentations and tours with a conservation focus
  • Australian working rights and current drivers licence

Qualifications (preferred):

  • Certificate III in Wildlife & Exhibited Animal Care or other relevant qualification/experience
  • Previous experience with the maintenance of venomous snakes in human care with an excellent safety record
  • Previous experience with maintenance of crocodilians in human care
  • Current Basic First Aid
