Lead the Barwon Area Ranger team implementing vital parks programs including fire, cultural heritage, pest and weed control, community engagement and recreation.

About the role

The Team Leader Rangers (TLR) is an integral management role leading a team of professional Rangers and is responsible for identifying and managing key influences to achieve conservation and community outcomes affecting the Barwon Area Parks and Reserves. Barwon Area manages 41 reserves from its base in Narrabri. It covers parts of the Nandewar Range including Mount Kaputar National Park, as well as reserves on the western slopes such as Warrabah National Park across the western plains including internationally recognised wetlands of Narran Lake Nature Reserve and Gwydir Wetlands State Conservation Area. The focus of the area is not just conservation of these important areas but promoting and supporting the public's enjoyment of the area through camping and other accommodation.

The role is highly diverse and is mainly office based but field work in surrounding Reserves is still a regular requirement. Working closely with the Area Manager, you will be relied upon provide advice and assistance as required whilst managing the day to day planning of a broad range of park management functions to ensure the delivery of quality frontline services whilst fostering a culture of professionalism and high performance. The TLR must ensure information flow, planning and reporting relevant to the field operations of the Area and that internal and external project contractors' and consultants' requirements are met. You'll need expert project planning and reporting skills, have good prioritisation skills to meet competing priorities whilst liaising with a variety stakeholders including contractors.

About you

This role is suited to individuals who are passionate about conservation, land management, visitation and working collaboratively. You'll be a practical decision-maker with the ability to think and solve problems on your feet. Your project planning skills will be key in juggling and meeting competing priorities, while your ability to motivate and influence your team will be key to achieving outcomes in a busy and changing environment. To be successful in the role, you will also have:

  • Strong leadership skills to manage a diverse team in multiple locations
  • Very strong facilitation and negotiation skills
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • High attention to detail and great communication skills
  • Expert project planning skills and discipline to ensure due process is followed
  • Sound IT capabilities, particularly in common MS Office software and some GIS experience
  • Industry experience including environmental assessment skills are preferred

Essential requirements:

  • Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent

This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit, enjoy working outdoors as part of a team, and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining some of NSW's most precious natural places.

Applicants must meet the requirements of a firefighting medical which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake frontline firefighting roles. The applicant must pass the task based fitness assessment to a moderate level within the probationary period (up to 12 months) and annually thereafter.

The role holder must obtain certification at the appropriate level prior to undertaking firefighting/incident control duties.
