About the Role

Our Federal Government Client are seeking a skilled API Developer to design, build, and operate secure, high-throughput APIs and integration services. You'll own the full lifecycle - from architecture and development to observability and production operations - supporting major digital platforms and whole-of-government initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • API design & implementation: Build RESTful APIs using OpenAPI 3.x (Swagger) with clear versioning (semver) and deprecation policies.
  • Service engineering: Develop clean, modular services using , TypeScript, ReactJS, or .NET (C#).
  • Reliability & performance: Apply idempotency, pagination, rate limiting, caching, retries/backoff, timeouts, and circuit breakers. Profile and optimise for latency and throughput.
  • Security: Implement OAuth 2.1, OIDC, JWT, mTLS, secrets management, and input validation. Follow least-privilege IAM principles.
  • Testing & quality: Maintain unit, integration, and contract tests (e.g. Postman). Develop test data strategies and apply static analysis for code quality.
  • CI/CD & runtime: Deliver via Git-based CI/CD (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins). Containerise with Docker and deploy to Kubernetes or serverless environments.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Provision and manage with Terraform, CloudFormation, or Bicep.
  • Cloud platforms: Work with AWS services including S3, DynamoDB, and SNS.
  • Observability: Instrument with OpenTelemetry and expose metrics, logs, and traces through Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK/OpenSearch.
  • Operations: Define SLOs/SLAs, maintain runbooks, and participate in on-call within a "you build it, you run it" model.
  • Documentation & DX: Produce API docs, SDKs, changelogs, and migration guides; support partner teams.

  • AuthN/AuthZ: OAuth 2.1, OIDC, JWT, mTLS, scopes, claims, token lifecycles
  • Data & Caching: SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL), NoSQL (MongoDB/DynamoDB), Redis for caching and rate limiting
  • Messaging: Kafka, Kinesis, Pub/Sub, SQS, RabbitMQ - understanding async patterns and exactly/at-least-once delivery semantics
  • CI/CD: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins; trunk-based or short-lived branching with automated tests and contract tests
  • Containers & Orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes (Deployments, Services, Ingress, ConfigMaps, Secrets, HPA)
  • IaC: Terraform (modules, workspaces, state management), policy checks
  • Observability: OpenTelemetry, PromQL, log correlation, alert tuning
  • API Gateways: Kong, Apigee, AWS API Gateway, Azure API Management (policies, rate plans, mTLS, custom auth)
  • Performance & Resilience: k6, JMeter, Resilience4j, Envoy, connection pooling, circuit breakers, N+1 detection, bulkheads

Desirable Skills

  • GraphQL (including federation), schema registries, and gateway patterns
  • Event-driven architectures (CDC, outbox), CQRS, and stream processing (Kafka Streams, Flink)
  • Serverless computing: AWS Lambda, Azure Functions; workflows with Step Functions or Temporal
  • Service mesh: Istio, Linkerd, and zero-trust networking principles
  • Secrets management: AWS KMS, HashiCorp Vault
  • Supply chain security: SBOM, SLSA, COSIGN
  • Design methodologies: Domain-driven design (DDD), Architecture Decision Records (ADR), modular monolith and microservice trade-offs
