An exciting career awaits you at ASC, Australia's submarine company - the sustainer of Australia's conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines in the AUKUS partnership. To deliver on this new and exciting work, we are seeking skilled trades individuals to undertake long-term, world-leading training in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, U.S.
Placements will deploy in March 2026 and will be between 12 to 18 months in duration.
Responsibilities
In the role of Ventilation Tradesperson, your responsibilities are:
- Installation and fabrication: Install and fabricate temporary ventilation systems, including the complex ductwork, components, and lagging (insulation) needed for ship repair.
- Maintenance and repair: Perform routine inspections and preventive and corrective maintenance on ventilation systems.
- Atmospheric testing and safety: Conduct atmospheric tests to evaluate ventilation requirements to support confined spaces for safe entry. A critical part of the job is ensuring proper ventilation to remove hazardous fumes, gases, and particulates.
- System testing: Test and adjust ventilation systems to ensure they are functioning correctly and that airflow and temperatures are balanced.
Eligibility Criteria
The successful applicant must possess:
- Certificate III or IV in Engineering: Fabrication Trade or equivalent (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical, Marine Mechanic).
- Recognised Trade Certificate in a relevant discipline (e.g. Welding, Pipefitting).
- Gas Test Atmosphere certification to evaluate ventilation requirements
- Experience in the ventilation industry, or with ventilation systems on vessels
- Ability to diagnose and fix issues with new and existing pipe systems
- Australian Citizenship
- An ability to obtain and maintain a NV1 defence clearance
Additional Details
During deployment, you will receive on the job training combined with instructor led classroom training. This training program and work is carried out in accordance with company and US Navy processes and procedures.
At the completion of your deployment, you will return to Western Australia (WA) to carry out the planning, management, and in-water maintenance activities on the United States Navy Virginia Class Submarines. Repatriation to WA is non-negotiable, so please consider this when applying.
Please note: This is a Civilian role and recruitment processes will differ from those undertaken in Active Service Defence recruitment.
