Where the team fits in
This role is within the Membership and Leads to Keys Portfolio which sit within the Consumer Group of the business. The Consumer Group's mandate is to be the number one destination for Australian property and real estate through having the most engaging and best real estate and property experience.
In the Nurture team (part of the Consumer Experience division), you'll help shape the future of the user property journey by building out membership and collections experiences in web and native apps. The Nurture squad's purpose is to guide and support members throughout their property journey by providing personalised tools and actions. The squad aims to be more useful to members more often, ensuring that their experience is tailored and relevant. Delivering features and optimisations such as Add to Plan, New Homes Registrations, Collections Next Best Actions, Saved Properties, Quick View, Notes, and AI-powered tools like Planner Agent.
This squad works closely with many teams across the business, including several teams in Consumer Product & Experience, Customer Product & Experience, PropTrack and Data Services, among others.
What the role is all about
As an Engineering Manager, you will play a pivotal role in driving technical excellence and delivery success across your squad. You will be responsible for delivering on the product roadmap by enhancing technical solutions, ensuring engineering quality, and leading a team of individual contributors to achieve organisational goals. This role combines technical leadership, people management, and delivery leadership to foster a collaborative, innovative, and high-performance environment.
Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership:
- Contribute to and define the tech strategy for the business unit.
- Involvement in building the product strategy, vision & OKRs through representing the technical aspects.
- Oversee and execute the technical strategy of the team.
- Lead the technical design of solutions within your team.
- Maintain systems health and engineering compliance.
- Oversee the technical operation of systems your team owns. At REA we practice "You Own it You Run". Ensure your team contributes to your groups support roster & supports resolution of related incidents.
- Contribute to product discovery through tech direction & feasibility assessments.
- Lead engineering excellence through best practices, including design patterns, clean code, Test-Driven Development (TDD), and unit testing.
- Lead adoption of REA standards & platforms and align with tech strategy in your team.
- Contribute the tech component of GIF business cases.
- Support other teams that use or contribute to your teams' systems & service, e.g. through federation.
- Review mission critical PRs.
- Review IPRs and pairing where appropriate.
- Ensure incident management practises are in place and manage comms to stakeholder communication during an incident
People Leadership:
- Guide and manage individual contributors to foster career development and team cohesion, typically you will have 5-8 engineers in your team as your direct reports.
- You may identify & coach emerging leadership talent.
- Some of our teams are, partially or fully, staffed through our partner (Thoughtworks) team members internationally. Here, your scope may extend across one squad teams & up to 10 team members. This includes the onboarding and management of contingent workers.
- Conduct mid-year and end-of-year performance reviews.
- Partner with HR in managing performance and providing coaching and development feedback.
- Lead recruitment efforts to build a high-performing team.
- Promote team engagement and oversee the well-being and health of the team.
- Develop and manage your squads, focusing on team development and performance improvement.
Delivery Leadership:
- Deliver the product roadmap, tracking and communicating progress.
- Provide forecasts and timelines contributing to product roadmaps.
- Lead prioritisation and dependencies (for initiatives that don't have TPMs)
- Ensure team effectiveness, overseeing team ceremonies & using standard delivery metrics to inform continuous improvement.
- Manage project trackers with support from Finance.
- Sometimes your delivery may be part of a larger program of work, in which case you will liaise with a Technical Program Manager regarding the planning and delivery of your teams.
