Where you'll be working

The HNEKids ADHD Service is a multidisciplinary team based in Wallsend, dedicated to supporting children and their families in accessing comprehensive assessment and treatment for ADHD.

The service works in close collaboration with general practitioners, education providers, mental health services, and paediatricians across all areas of the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD).

We deliver in-person care at our Wallsend clinic and extend our reach through telehealth and outreach services to children and families living in outer regional and rural areas of the district.

Our team is passionate about delivering equitable, culturally safe care, and is committed to helping families overcome challenges related to distance, psychosocial factors, and financial barriers.

What you'll be doing

The Clinical Psychologist within the HNEKids ADHD Service plays a key role in the multidisciplinary assessment and care of children with ADHD. This includes active participation in assessment clinics alongside paediatricians and the Clinical Nurse Consultant, as well as contributing to case preparation prior to the child's initial appointment, whether in-person or via telehealth.

The role involves providing brief psychological interventions for children and their families, while also offering guidance, advocacy, and referral support to help families access suitable long-term therapy options. The psychologist also liaises with education providers and mental health services across the Local Health District to ensure coordinated and holistic care.

An additional component of the role may include delivering group education sessions for parents and carers. The service has a suite of adaptable workshop materials, originally developed by a previous psychologist and pharmacist, which have proven to be highly popular. These sessions can be offered depending on service capacity and clinical demand.

It is important to note that formal psychological assessments (cognitive, adaptive, developmental) are not a core part of this role and are only conducted when essential to the diagnostic process.

The successful applicant will be well supported by a dynamic multidisciplinary team, including paediatricians, a pharmacist, a Clinical Nurse Consultant, a Co-Management Coordinator, administration staff, and a Service Manager. There is also a strong culture of peer support and clinical supervision among psychologists working in community-based paediatric teams. The Clinical Psychologist will be welcomed into regular case discussions with the Child Development Team, a closely aligned sister service.

About you

You will bring a collaborative and team-focused approach, working effectively with colleagues across disciplines to deliver high-quality, integrated care. Your excellent communication skills will enable you to engage confidently with a wide range of stakeholders, including children, families, educators, health professionals, and service providers. You will demonstrate the flexibility to adapt your communication style to suit diverse audiences and needs.

In addition, you will have strong problem-solving abilities and well-developed organisational skills, which will be essential in managing a dynamic caseload. Your capacity to coordinate care will help ensure that each child's journey through the service is responsive, safe, and tailored to their individual needs. Your proactive approach will contribute to the delivery of consistent, timely, and culturally safe care for families across the district.

Requirements

  • Current registration as a Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited postgraduate clinical psychology qualification of no less than two years full time duration or recognised equivalent, displayed on the Psychology Board of Australia website.
