Principal Lawyer

The Principal Lawyers at MHLC are responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the MHLC legal practice, including the legal advice provided by MHLC lawyers in all program areas, ensuring a high-quality service that responds to people experiencing co-occurring mental health and legal needs across the State of Victoria. The position will have approximately 6-8 reports, as well as play a leading role in service coordination and is part of the MHLC Management Team.
Applicants must have a minimum of 5-7 years of legal practice experience.
Candidates must demonstrate 1-2 years of management or supervisory experience.
This role is a newly created position, bringing the total number of Principal Lawyers to 3 for the organisation. Each Principal Lawyer will have responsibility for one area of practice – Legal Advocacy, Inside Access or Partners in Community.
Each Principal Lawyer provides supervision, mentoring and strategic case direction to other lawyers within the MHLC. This includes the supervision of paralegals, students, volunteers, or contractors as required.
The Principal Lawyer provides legal assistance to clients in our key practice areas of law including mental health, infringements, NDIS, tenancy, guardianship and administration, child protection, intervention orders, freedom of information, Commonwealth benefits and family law, along with other areas relevant to disadvantaged communities, such as summary crime and civil law. This includes attending outreach court and tribunal locations, prisons and stakeholder venues to provide advice, consultations, casework and legal education in various practice areas.
Current admission to practice law in any Australian jurisdiction is required.
The incumbent will be innovative and collaborative, and will lead best practice in legal service, while overseeing project and program coordination to ensure deliverables are met.
Experience working with disadvantaged or vulnerable populations is preferred.
