SMYL Community College is seeking applications from Education Psychologists with a keen desire to work with at risk students.

As a 'Curriculum and Re-engagement in Education' (CaRE) School, SMYL Community College offers an individually constructed alternative education program under the School Education Act 1999 (WA) for 12 to 18 year olds.

All students referred to SMYL Community College experience significant barriers to education. Teaching and learning is adjusted and support services provided, to meet individual student needs. We utilise a collaborative case management model to find the most appropriate learning pathway for every student.

Campuses are located in Rockingham, Kwinana, Medina, Mandurah and Fremantle. Successful candidates should possess a willingness to work at a range of campuses, depending on organisational requirements.

Valid driver's licence and reliable transport are essential for travel between campuses.

Education Psychologists at SMYL:

  • Apply psychological skills and knowledge to improve the mental health, learning and behavioural outcomes for students; in collaboration with college personnel, parents, caregivers and other agencies.
  • Consult with College personnel, including providing feedback from classroom observations and assisting in the management of challenging student behaviour through planning and intervention mapping.
  • Assist with the development, implementation and facilitation of school-based student support services and social & emotional learning programs.
  • Assist the college in maximising the educational and psycho-social outcomes of individuals and groups of students including the provision of assessment for students that are identified as requiring additional support funding.
  • Support the implementation of SMYL Community College frameworks including (but not exclusive to) Positive Behaviour Support and Restorative Practices.
  • Provide psychological services to the College when affected by critical issues/incidents; including undertaking or supporting the risk assessment process with students and post-crisis debrief responses with staff.
  • Maintain records to ensure appropriate assessment, evaluation, monitoring and reporting of student and College needs and ensure these are consistent with SMYL Community College and Psychology Board of Australia requirements.

Applicants should meet the following selection criteria:

  1. Hold a current Working with Children Check (WA) or be willing to obtain one prior to commencement.
  2. Hold current full registration as a Psychologist with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) or be eligible for registration.
  3. Knowledge of school psychology services and programs in an educational environment to maximise student learning outcomes.
  4. Knowledge of the implementation and evaluation of a variety of psychological approaches appropriate for individual, group and system-level intervention.
  5. Interpersonal skills, which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of a multidisciplinary team, working with a range of clients across campuses.
  6. Ability to apply analytical and conceptual skills to issues identification, risk assessment and analysis, intervention and evaluation.
  7. Demonstrated good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships and demonstrating the capacity to produce correspondence, reports and case notes, and interview and training (facilitation) skills.
  8. Demonstrated effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing prioritises within timelines.
  9. Demonstrated good research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide solutions.
  10. Demonstrated knowledge of the youth sector, particularly local organisations and services.
