There are currently five (5) vacancies available for immediate filling, and two (2) further upcoming:

• Specified Calling Level 1 or 2: three (3) fixed term positions in the Civil Law Practice (two until January 2026 and one until June 2026).
• Specified Calling Level 2: one (1) permanent position in the Work and Development Permit Service Team.
• Specified Calling Level 3/4: one (1) five year fixed term position (to 30 June 2030) in the Self-Represented Litigants Service.
• Specified Calling Level 3/4: two (2) fixed term positions from February to June 2026 in the Civil Law Practice.

About the Civil Law Division

The Civil Law Division of Legal Aid WA's purpose is to assist people, particularly those experiencing entrenched disadvantage, who are vulnerable to civil legal problems, to understand their rights, and empower them to achieve just outcomes.

We are a multi-disciplinary Division which incorporates a number of specialist services, being the Civil Law Practice, which includes the Work and Development Permit Service, Health Justice Partnership, Youth Rights, Workplace Sexual Harassment, Self-Represented Litigants Service, our core civil work related to money, housing, work, and Guardianship & Administration; the NDIS Appeals Team, and Elder Rights WA.

About the Roles

Solicitor Specified Calling Level 1 or 2

Three (3) fixed-term vacancies are available at this level in the Civil Law Practice undertaking core civil work, and Workplace Sexual Harassment work. Responsibilities at this level may include duty lawyer, legal advice, legal task, minor assistance and legal representation. Matters may be in any State or Federal Court or Tribunal.

Solicitor Specified Calling Level 2

One (1) permanent vacancy is available at this level in the Work and Development Service Team. Responsibilities may include legal advice, legal task, minor assistance, stakeholder engagement and law reform. Matters will generally be in the Magistrates Court of WA. The lawyer will also be responsible for supervising the legal work of junior members of the team including a paralegal and community liaison and education officer, and requires an unrestricted practising certificate.

Solicitor Specified Calling Level 3 or 4

One (1) fixed-term vacancy is available now until 30 June 2030 at this level in the Self-Represented Litigants Service. This is a new role created due to an increase in the level of funding for this service. As the leader of this service, you will represent the Division Director and Legal Aid WA at a high level, including with the Federal Court Registrars, Federal Court Registry, and with the programme funder, the Commonwealth Attorney-Generals' Department. Matters will be solely in the Federal jurisdiction, and the areas of law covered by this service include migration, employment, bankruptcy, and discrimination.

Two (2) fixed-term vacancies are available from February to June 2026 as the Health Justice Partnership manager, and in the Youth Rights service. Both positions require a broad range of civil legal knowledge as neither service is limited by law type.

About you

We are looking for a Pool of lawyers who:

• Have relevant or recent experience in Civil Law
• Have experience working with clients who have complex needs and an understanding of the non-legal issues impacting our clients
• Communicate with a high degree of professionalism
• Are able to work autonomously, and as part of a team

In addition, and for appointment at Specified Calling Level 3/4, we are looking for a Pool of lawyers who:

• Can undertake matters of factual and legal difficulty
• Are highly regarded by their peers as mentors / supervisors
• Can manage programmes and/or projects and have responsibility for funding agreements, including budgeting, and financial and data reporting (experience will be highly regarded but is not essential)

This selection process may also be used to fill other similar vacancies throughout our organisation. Alternatively, should the successful candidate decline or vacate the advertised position, the next most suitable candidate may be selected from this process. Both options remain valid for a period of twelve (12) months (unless otherwise stated) from the completion date of the initial selection process. Should no suitable candidate be identified, or an offer declined, the panel may search for further candidates beyond the closing date.

Appointment to all positions at Legal Aid WA is subject to a satisfactory national criminal history check, integrity and conflict checks, and 100-point identification check.
