- High profile and influential role that delivers genuine impact.
- Drive longer term member growth and ongoing financial sustainability.
- Lead with commercial acumen, a deep sense of empathy and tenacity
Since its inception in 1891 Master Builders Tasmania, has represented the interests of businesses that operate in the housing, commercial building, and engineering construction sectors. As the only peak industry body to represent these three sectors it is widely acknowledged as the preeminent industry association for them. Over its 134-year history, the Association has grown to become the pre-eminent industry voice, with over 650 members businesses from all sectors of the building and construction industry, and from all regions in Tasmania.
About the Role
Reporting to the Tasmanian Board, the CEO leads all business operations and serves as the chief public policy advocate and representative of Master Builders Tasmania (MBT). This dynamic role demands both commercial and political acumen, providing strategic leadership while navigating the complex and sometimes competing interests of a federated industry association.
The CEO engages with government, industry, and internal stakeholders, collaborating with other member associations to influence policy in support of members and the broader construction sector. Strong leadership skills are essential to drive strategic outcomes and lead a team of industry professionals. The ability to build relationships, influence decision-makers, and manage a high-performing team will be key determinants of success.
The role is centered on leading in the best interests of MBT members, insights gained through active listening and meaningful engagement. This enables a deep understanding of member concerns, effective advocacy, and the identification of opportunities for collaborative leadership to support the wellbeing and future of Tasmania's construction industry.
The CEO is accountable for leading the commercial operations of the business during a period of significant growth, ensuring strategies are in place to maximise the value of recent capital investments and support a broader commercial service offering. This requires a deep understanding of managing growth and risk within the context of a not-for-profit, member-based organisation. The CEO will also identify and evaluate future capital investment opportunities that align with MBT's strategic objectives-such as expanding training infrastructure, extending services into regional areas, and introducing new offerings that support members and ensure long-term sustainability.
Equally important, the CEO is responsible for fostering a strong, positive workplace culture. With an engaged and capable team in place, the CEO must continue to build team cohesiveness, promote professional development, and create an environment that drives collaboration, high performance, and job satisfaction. Their leadership will be key to maintaining a thriving and resilient organisational culture.
About You
This role suits an experienced, professionally qualified executive with exceptional communication skills, political awareness, and the ability to influence a wide range of stakeholders while remaining apolitical. While direct industry experience is beneficial, a strong grasp of economic principles and business operations is essential, along with a belief in free enterprise, markets, and entrepreneurship. The successful candidate will align with Master Builders' mission to support member businesses and advocate for the building and construction industry.
They must be confident engaging in policy debate-privately and publicly-under media and public scrutiny. A high degree of intellectual and emotional intelligence, resilience, and tenacity is vital, as is the ability to lead with empathy, build trust, and foster meaningful connections across the organisation and membershipImportantly, you will have experience in developing, enabling, and managing a workforce, and will be committed to fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-performing workplace culture. Prior exposure to working in a member-based association-particularly within a federated model-will provide valuable insight into its unique dynamics and support a seamless integration into the role.
The Benefits
A strong salary package will be offered to the successful candidate. You will be working at the cutting edge of important public policy that impacts Tasmania and gain personal satisfaction from being able to influence policy outcomes.
