About the role

Stantec is expanding our Urban Development capability in ACT, and we're looking for a Principal Civil Engineer to join our Canberra team. This leadership role offers flexible working arrangements and the opportunity to drive some of the region's most impactful community development projects.

As a Principal Engineer, your primary purpose is to lead the delivery of innovative, sustainable, and community-focused civil engineering solutions across the full project lifecycle from strategic planning and concept design to detailed design and implementation.

Our approach to community development consulting covers master planned communities, mixed-use developments, parks, recreation facilities, and streetscapes. We activate urban downtowns, suburban centres, small towns, and rural areas - and the multimodal corridors that connect us to the places we work, live, and thrive.

Day to day tasks would involve:

  • Lead project design teams and ensure all design documentation meets statutory standards and client requirements.
  • Oversee drafting and design outputs to maintain high technical quality and commercial viability.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, manage project scope changes, and contribute to ongoing business development.
  • Provide technical input into feasibility studies and complex design challenges, offering practical and cost-effective solutions.
  • Mentor junior staff and support their professional growth within a collaborative team environment.
  • Contribute to business strategy by supporting implementation of action plans and identifying opportunities for growth and industry recognition.

Qualifications

To be successful for this role you'll need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum 8 years working experience in consulting field and/or recognised as a Principal Engineer in your current role.
  • Professional Engineering registration.
  • Strong technical expertise and ability to produce accurate design documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven experience in time management and organisational skills including the ability to manage resources and delegate tasks effectively.
  • Ongoing commitment to professional development through self-study, training and seminars, and maintaining your Continual Professional Development (CPD)
