About the role

We are seeking a compassionate, client centred, highly organised, and detail-oriented professional to join our team as a Nurse Practitioner on a Full-Time, Part-Time or Contractor basis.

In this pivotal clinical role, you'll provide expert assessment, diagnosis, and management for clients engaging in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy (PAT). Working within a multidisciplinary team, you'll ensure care is safe, lawful, and evidence-based while supporting every stage of the client journey—from referral and screening to coordination and governance. Key responsibilities:

Clinical Assessment & Screening

  • Act as a clinical point of contact for new referrals when required.
  • Review referral documentation and obtain collateral information as necessary.
  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial and medical assessments for PAT referrals.
  • Confirm or refine psychiatric and medical diagnoses in collaboration with other hcp's and within scope of practice.
  • Order and interpret diagnostics (pathology, ECG) as required.
  • Collaborate with RMHN on Screening Part A and complete medical clearance for treatment readiness.
  • Identify and manage contraindications (e.g. medication interactions, cardiovascular risk).
  • Escalate high-risk presentations promptly to senior clinicians on the Clinical Care Team.

Prescribing & Medication Management

  • Prescribe, adjust, or cease psychotropic or adjunct medications within NP formulary and governance.
  • Develop and oversee medication tapering plans
  • Ensure compliance with the Medicines and Poisons Act 2014 (WA) and TGA Authorised Prescriber conditions.
  • Maintain PBS/MBS documentation and communicate medication plans to referring GP, psychiatrist or relevant health care professional(s).

Care Liaison

  • Serve as a consistent point of contact for clients accepted into the program from a clinical perspective.
  • Monitor client wellbeing, medication tapering, and risk factors throughout their treatment journey, including regular phone check-ins and occasional in-clinic reviews
  • Act as a direct support and escalation point for the RMHN in the Clinical Care Team
  • Escalate relevant clinical issues and concerns to senior clinicians on the Clinical Care Team (and authorised prescribers if necessary).
  • Ensure all communications are documented in an accurate, timely, and compliant manner.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary (MDT) meetings and provide clinical oversight of complex cases.
  • Liaise with GPs, psychiatrists, psychologists, and allied health providers for shared care if necessary.

Clinical Governance & Quality

  • Maintain documentation and records in accordance with legal, ethical, and professional standards.
  • Contribute to the development and review of policies, clinical guidelines, and safety protocols.
  • Participate in clinical audits, data collection, and service improvement projects.
  • Supervise RMHNs and trainee clinicians on triage and assessment practices such as physical health checks.
  • Uphold trauma-informed, culturally safe, and ethically grounded care.

Education & Leadership

  • Provide clinical education to team members on psychopharmacology, risk management, and medication safety.
  • Participate in relevant PAT training programs specific to role and contribute to staff competency frameworks.
  • Model interprofessional collaboration and uphold Empax's culture of compassion, integrity, and evidence-based excellence.

Qualifications and Registration

  • Endorsed Nurse Practitioner with current AHPRA registration.
  • Minimum Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) or equivalent.
  • Endorsed for mental health scope of practice.
  • National Police Clearance, and Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Essential selection criteria

  • Advanced clinical reasoning and diagnostic ability in complex mental health contexts
  • Expertise in pharmacology, risk assessment, and medication management
  • Strong case management, care coordination, and organisational skills
  • Proficiency in electronic health record and documentation management
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage distressed or vulnerable clients compassionately
  • Capacity to work autonomously within defined clinical governance and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Familiarity with Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy (PAT) protocols, TGA Authorised Prescriber requirements, and data/reporting processes
  • Training in trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and crisis intervention
  • Knowledge of psychotropic medications and the ability to understand psychotropic tapering and related issues

Desirable selection criteria

  • Experience in psychedelic research trials.
  • Familiarity with psychedelic pharmacology, contraindications, and therapeutic frameworks.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and ethical considerations in PAT delivery.
