Who is Controlled Burning Contractors Pty Ltd (CBC) and why do they undertake prescribed burns?
CBC is a company that provides advise and services to government and private land owners on rural bush fire management and implement hazard reduction burns.
How do I become a Fire crew with CBC?
Prescribed burn fire crew positions are advertised annually. You can live anywhere within NSW and QLD to be included in to the burn crew. If your application progresses past the initial screening you will be requested to undertake a phone interview and will need to provide certified copies of your supportive documentation.
What is CBC prescribed burn fire crew employment?
CBC complete prescribed burn activities within NSW and QLD during spring and autumn annually. Deployments include fire ground preparation, implementation, patrol and can be single-day or multiple-day deployments.
If successful, you will be placed on a 'call when ready' database.
- Prior to each burning season, you will be informed of the season program and asked if you are available to participate in a prescribed burn.
- You will receive no less than 4 days notice of the potential burn.
- Staff have 24 hours to confirm availability.
What are the conditions of employment?
Adequate level of training and experience in prescribed burning operations. Protective clothing and other personal protective equipment are provided for your use during your employment and must be worn when undertaking prescribed burning operations. You will be required to maintain a level of fitness based on the requirements of the job.
What will I do when I am CBC prescribed burn crew?
As an CBC prescribed burn crew you need to be prepared to:
- Work as part of a team.
- Work in a wide range of outdoor, potentially stressful environments for extended periods of time (including into overnight).
- Work in environments where you may be exposed to heat, smoke, dust, chemicals, high levels of noise, limited visibility and limited mobility.
- Wear the provided protective equipment.
- Travel in/operate vehicles and machinery over a variety of terrains, day or night for extended periods.
- Use senses (sight, sound, touch) to help make decisions and maintain personal safety.
Can I contract to CBC?
No, all employees are casual.

Prerequisites for CBC burn fire crew are:
- Have completed (or the ability to complete) PUASS00080 Prescribed Burn Crew Leader.
- Manual driving license.
- Completed Fire Fighting Medical and Task Based Fitness Assessment to Moderate level.
- Ability to work safely and effectively in a team.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instruction.
- Candidates with any Australian work status will be considered for this position.
Desirable (not essential) skills and experience that are advantages are:
- Construction Induction training (White Card).
- Driving 4WD vehicles training.
- Chainsaw operation accreditation.
- A current Senior / Remote first aid certificate.
- Ardious fire fighter fitness.
- Chainsaw operation accreditation.
- Medium rigid vehicle drivers licence.
- In excess of 10 years firefighting experience.
- Existing skills such as auto electrian, mechanic, pump servicing skills
- Illustrated team leadership/management experience.

Only fit and healthy people should apply for these positions. Only people that have completed Fire Fighting Medical and Fitness Task Based Assessment to Moderate level will be considered.
