Currently, there are around 5.5 million Australians with a disability. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) implements the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which is one of the biggest social reforms in the country since Medicare. As an Agency, we support more than 717,000 participants with a significant and permanent disability, and the families and carers of those living with disability. For many Australians, this will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The NDIA is designed to enhance the quality of life and increase economic and social participation for people with disability and will mean a peace of mind for every Australian.

A new role awaits

The Financial Reporting and Control Branch supports the Agency in financial management and compliance with legislative and policy requirements, including the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act and the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act We provide timely and accurate financial information based on strong financial controls, supporting the agency's decision-making and the Government's objectives for financial sustainability of both the agency and the scheme.

This position sits within the Scheme Reporting section – ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the Scheme's financials. We provide comprehensive oversight of the Scheme's financial performance and position, monitoring the financial systems and controls that underpin these statements. We are responsible for the financial management of the Bilateral Agreements including managing the contributions to the Scheme from States and Territories and the Commonwealth.

As the APS6 Senior Finance Officer Scheme Reporting you will exercise a considerable degree of independence to engage in complex problem solving to manage Scheme financial matters and issues.

You will apply your initiative, sound decision-making and judgement, attention to detail and play a key role in supporting the financial reporting through the preparation of accurate financial accounts, insightful reporting, and meaningful analysis. You will contribute to the integrity of financial data, assist in the development of management reports, and help drive informed decision-making across the organisation. Working with key internal and external stakeholders where required you will represent and negotiate on behalf of the Branch to advance the NDIA's financial control environment.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial accounts in accordance with relevant standards.
  • Produce management reports to provide insight into the financial results.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of financial reporting frameworks and templates.
  • Perform reconciliations, journal entries, and variance analysis to ensure data accuracy.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to gather financial inputs and clarify reporting requirements.
  • Support operational teams with timely and reliable financial data.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of reporting systems and processes.
  • Assist with preparation of material to respond to financial queries from auditors and management.
  • Maintain compliance with internal controls, policies, and regulatory obligations.
  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis to support strategic initiatives and operational decisions.

Our ideal candidate is an experienced finance professional with experience gained working for large, complex organisations. Public Sector experience will be well regarded but is not essential.

What we're looking for in our ideal candidate:

  • Substantial experience working in a finance function, preferably gained from a Commonwealth, State, Territory or larger organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial reporting, including preparation of financial journals and reconciliations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret financial data and provide meaningful insights.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise financial reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Sound understanding of accounting principles and relevant regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication skills, able to collaborate effectively across teams and explain financial concepts to non-financial audiences.
  • Proactive and solutions-focused, with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Experience with Microsoft Applications and substantial Excel experience.
  • Experience supporting audits and compliance processes is highly regarded.
  • Experience working in SAP or similar finance platform is desirable.
  • Experience working with data reporting tools such as SAS & Power BI is highly regarded.
  • Tertiary qualifications in accounting, finance, or a related discipline (or working towards).

While this role is ideally performed from Geelong VIC or Richmond – VIC, flexible working arrangements may be considered. We intend to fill this role in an ongoing capacity, however non-ongoing roles up to 12 months with the possibility of extension up to 2 years may be offered.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police History check, Worker Screening check and/or Working with Children Check (where required) and provide evidence of Australian Citizenship.
