The Service

Centrecare's Housing Support Workers; Drug and Alcohol Initiative (HSW DAI) South West Region aims to support people who are experiencing or have a history of drug and/or substance abuse issues to achieve and sustain long term accommodation. The target group is required to be engaged with specialised drug and alcohol treatment service and working on their drug and/or substance abuse challenges which may be barriers to maintaining stable housing. The service has a strong focus on building the capacity of clients to resolve their tenancy issues by providing tenancy advice and support, advocacy, practical assistance and providing referrals to link clients in with mainstream services.

The Role

Support is provided to the client for an average of 6 months with intense support being provided initially and reducing over time as the needs impacting upon homelessness are addressed. Outreach support is provided at a minimum of fortnightly home visits. The service goal is support people who experience or have a history of drug and substance abuse to overcome those challenges and barriers to enable them to sustain stable housing.

Selection Criteria

  • Minimum Certificate IV in Community Services or related discipline.
  • Relevant experience in the areas of outreach, homelessness, individual/family support and/or case management.
  • Well-developed communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Computer literacy skills and the ability to collect statistical data related to service delivery.
  • Ability to work with a broad cross section of people to include business, other community-based agencies, private real estate agents, government and different socio-economic groups.
  • An understanding of strength-based approaches to client services.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • Possession of a current WA Driver's licence.
  • National Police Certificate and valid Working with Children Check
